Man Accused of Stealing Firearms in Jamestown Indicted

A 36-year-old man, Joseph Vijay Mills, is facing charges for allegedly stealing approximately 35 firearms from a business in Jamestown. The indictment, issued by a grand jury in the U.S. District Court in North Dakota, includes felony charges of possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, theft of firearms from a licensed dealer, and possession of stolen firearms.

Mills’ arrest took place in South Carolina on June 27, and he made an initial appearance on the charges the same day. As of now, no attorney has been appointed, and court hearings have not been scheduled. Once Mills is transferred to North Dakota, a court hearing will be arranged.

The case was investigated by Christine Gass, a Special Agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. Court documents reveal that Gass is aware of around 35 firearms that were stolen from the business premises.

Mills stands accused of possessing firearms after being convicted of a felony in 2023, stealing firearms from the Jamestown business, and knowingly possessing stolen firearms that were transported in interstate and foreign commerce. The theft is said to have occurred on June 16 or 17.

According to court records, the Stutsman County Sheriff’s Office responded to a reported burglary on June 18 at the Jamestown business. The Sheriff’s Office informed Gass that multiple firearms had been stolen from the premises, without any signs of forced entry.

Surveillance footage reviewed by Gass revealed a dark-colored sport utility vehicle, matching the description of a 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer registered to Mills, driving around the business parking lot. Subsequently, the Chevrolet was located abandoned at the business location.

In addition, a 2000 Pontiac Bonneville SE, allegedly stolen by Mills from another Jamestown business, was found parked in the same parking lot. The vehicle was later discovered in West Fargo, North Dakota.

The employees of the business also reported that $350 was missing from a cash box in the office.

Gass witnessed Mills entering the building, carrying pistols in his hands, and picking up a long rifle before leaving the premises on June 17.
