An AI Camera System Captures Hundreds of Drivers Breaking the Law

An artificial intelligence (AI) camera system has been deployed in the UK, which has successfully detected nearly 300 instances of drivers breaking the law during its first three days of operation. Within the initial 72 hours of operation, this AI camera system managed to detect 117 instances of mobile phone offences and 180 instances of seatbelt offences. Interestingly, in 2022, a larger vehicle-based system developed by road safety tech firm Acusensus went through a trial phase for 15 days in Devon and Cornwall, leading to the detection of 590 seatbelt offences and 45 mobile phone offences on various roads.

Devon and Cornwall Police have taken proactive measures towards addressing road safety concerns by implementing advanced technology. Adrian Leisk, the head of road safety for the force, expressed disappointment regarding the number of drivers found not wearing seatbelts during their previous trial.
