Revolve Introduces AI-Generated Fashion Collections

Californian fashion brand Revolve has made a groundbreaking move by launching three collections that are entirely created by artificial intelligence (AI). These innovative AI-generated collections were initially presented in a digital format at the first-ever AI Fashion Week (AIFW), hosted by Maison Meta in New York. Now, these collections have come to life and can be purchased on Revolve’s e-commerce platform.

What makes these collections unique is that they were not designed by conventional fashion designers. The masterminds behind these collections are architects Jos├® Sobral of Paatiff, Matilde Mariano of Molnm, and fashion stylist Op├® Majek of Op├®. Each collection comprises 10 to 12 distinct pieces, catering to various sizes from XS to L.

Revolve’s CEO of owned brands, Mitch Moseley, played a pivotal role in overseeing the design and production of these AI-generated collections. However, the specific profit-sharing agreement between the architects-turned-designers and Revolve has not been disclosed.

The designers were given access to Revolve’s extensive supply chain and were assigned a dedicated project manager, enabling them to work closely with the brand’s atelier team, product developers, pattern-makers, and technicians. Together, they collaborated on selecting suitable materials and refining the AI-generated designs, which were then produced in-house.

While the use of AI in fashion creation showcased efficiency and innovation, it also shed light on the current limitations of this technology. Some designs had to be modified to make them feasible for physical production, considering factors like functionality, comfort, and overall aesthetic appeal. For instance, architect Jos├® Sobral approached the design phase with a focus on technical aspects, leveraging his construction background to guide the process.

Moreover, Revolve’s introduction of AI-generated collections coincides with ‘Season 2’ of AIFW, which is scheduled to be held in Milan from 16th to 19th November. The upcoming season promises additional winners and clearer guidelines to streamline the production process, along with expansion to multiple locations.

For Revolve, this project served as a testing ground and a valuable learning experience. It provided an opportunity to collaborate with a large team of designers who typically create thousands of fashion designs annually. Although the design phase remains time-consuming, the utilization of AI significantly accelerates the subsequent production process.
