We are very blessed to have high quality Emergency Medicine available to us in many hospitals throughout the entire Upper Peninsula. Those who provide emergency care for medical emergencies will often be called upon to very promptly offer truly life saving medical care. They are often faced with a wide variety of very serious medical situations that they must accurately diagnose right away, and then promptly provide the much needed medical care.

An Emergency Department (ED), often also known as an Emergency Room (ER), is a medical treatment facility specializing in providing much needed urgent care to patients who present without an appointment. Patients in need of emergency care may arrive by their own transportation or be brought in by ambulance. Due to the unplanned nature of patient attendance, the Emergency Department must provide initial treatment for a broad spectrum of illnesses and injuries, some of which may be life threatening and require immediate attention. Let us now take a brief look at these various medical personnel who offer us this often needed emergency medial care.

Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) are highly trained to provide emergency medical care to individuals that are in urgent need of potentially life saving medical interventions. They are always ready to respond in a very short time to the emergency situations they face on a daily basis. An EMT is an individual who has received special training to provide emergency medical services. EMTs are highly trained clinicians whose job is to respond very quickly to multiple situations, including emergency personal medical issues, traumatic injuries, and accident scenes.

Emergency Physicians are the doctors on duty 24/7 in hospital Emergency Departments across the country. Emergency physicians are medical professionals who are dedicated to saving lives and providing the highest quality of care and the best outcomes to all patients. Emergency Physicians complete four years of undergraduate pre-medical education, four years of medical school, followed by three years of their Emergency Medicine residency training. During their many years of training, our emergency physicians acquire practical experience by working face-to-face with physicians and patients. In so doing, they learn the warning signs and symptoms of a true emergency, and how to offer life saving treatment to those in urgent need of this medical care.

Nurse Practitioners (NPs) are specialty care providers who initially receive their education and training to become a nurse. They then receive additional education and training to become licensed nurse practitioners. A nurse practitioner is often required to receive about 5 to 8 years of this specialized training. During their years of training, they develop specialized knowledge and the ability to work with physicians to establish diagnoses and to manage treatment plans. In the ED, they work with emergency physicians and all our emergency care givers to provide the much needed care to these emergency department patients.

Physician Assistants (PAs) are also licensed practitioners and they operate closely with our emergency physicians. PAs complete multiple years of training and are often also a key part of the personnel of our emergency departments. They also help to see patients with a variety of emergency medical issues and concerns. While working with our emergency physicians and all our ED personnel, they also help to ensure the patient is promptly receiving their much needed emergency care.

Of course, there are also many highly qualified nurses working in our emergency departments who also provide truly outstanding care to those in need of the urgent care provided in emergency departments. We all owe so much to our EMTs, Emergency Physicians, NPs, PAs, Nurses, and all who offer this potentially life saving care to those in need of this urgent care. Many thanks to all our Emergency Medicine Personnel who give so much to those in need of urgent medical care.
