If youÔÇÖre in the military you can keep registered in VA if you check their website they should have an exemption for military. Once you get out youÔÇÖre supposed to change registration to current address state. However this is heavily enforced, but when it is and you get blindsided your insurance will most likely be cancelled if itÔÇÖs not in the state youÔÇÖre residing in and the dmv will cancel your registration if itÔÇÖs not in the same state as your current address. My friend got slapped with this when he moved from Md to Florida. All states are different, and all cops are different. Yea cops can report this and make a big deal out of it. Every state as far as I know has a stipulation stating you have x amount of days to change registration and other critical info from when you moved to that state.

If you can register in VA do it, taxes will be incredibly pricey in CA. When my brother was active duty, he bought a car in AZ on the way to CA. When he got there, the taxes were thousands of dollars. I ended up registering it for him in VA and despite personal property tax, saved him several thousand dollars.

My wife and I are TX residents (TX licenses) from back when we were stationed there. We claim TX because there are no state income taxes. We recently were stationed in VA and are now stationed in CA. I have my truck registered in VA because Norfolk/VA Beach exempts military from property taxes and registration is cheap (like $50/year). We are in the process of buying a new car in CA, and we will be registering it in CA. I would prefer to register it in VA for the cheaper registration, but I don’t have a VA address anymore, so we are stuck doing CA. If I get stationed there again, I’ll probably change it to VA then.

For insurance, I always change my policy to whatever state I’m actually living in. So I have VA plates, a TX license, and CA insurance. I did have to call VA DMV to give them my new CA policy information. They sent me a letter saying that they were going to cancel my registration because they got a notification from my insurance company that I had cancelled my VA policy. The issue was that they weren’t notified about my new policy, so I just had to give them the info myself. Once I got someone on the phone, it took about 5 mins to sort out.

    1. Your home of record is where you joined the military, Os canÔÇÖt change it but EÔÇÖs can with each reenlistment.

    2. Your state of residence is the state you chose as your ÔÇ£residenceÔÇØ and may be change by You if you wish. You donÔÇÖt have to change it, and if you are a resident of a state with no income tax you absolutely should keep it the entire time youÔÇÖre in the military.

    3. To change your state of residence you fill out a DD 2058. You generally need to be stationed in the state youÔÇÖre changing it to to do it, but if the finance troop is cool or if you have a case of beer/monster they might swing something for you.

    4. You register your cars wherever you want/can when it comes time. If you can do it all online and have the stickers mailed to you and itÔÇÖs all cheap, do that. I had my car registered in a state out west that was stupid cheap for military, but I lived on the east coast. The east coast state was expensive, so when j went back west to visit friends I renewed the tags in person at the dmv and took them home with me. Nobody cares.

    5. Insurance DOES care where the car physically is. Insure the car in the place you physically are.

    6. License doesnÔÇÖt matter until itÔÇÖs time for renewal. At renewal time youÔÇÖll have to see what the DMVÔÇÖs are willing to do. Not many DMVs will give you a license for their state when you donÔÇÖt actually live there, but if they will the fuckit.

You want to pick a state without income tax. AFAIK both Virginia and California are shit states when it comes to income tax. If you change to a CA resident while you live in CA you will have to pay income tax, if you move youÔÇÖll still have to pay but they refund it I think. Virginia I think makes you pay income tax regardless of where you live.

How long has it been since you were in Lackland? If you sweet talk the finance troop, or just rely on them not know wtf, you can try to do a DD2085 for Texas and see if you can get it through. Otherwise youÔÇÖll have to wait until you get stationed somewhere thatÔÇÖs cool on the wallet.

For example, at one point I was a California resident, living in arizona, with a texas license, and car registered in california. Nobody batted an eye. After a year in AZ I changed my state of residency to Texas.

Where is your state of residency that you have established? Sounds like VA, so it needs to be VA.
