This remarkable feat has drawn comparisons to the fairy tale of Sleeping Beauty, unfolding over an extended period.

The worms were brought back to life by providing them with food and water. Although their revival lasted less than a month, they have since generated over 100 generations of new worms.

Only a handful of animals are known to enter a state of suspended animation, referred to as cryptobiosis, in response to harsh environmental conditions. Examples include tardigrades, nematodes, and rotifers ÔÇö tiny aquatic organisms. The genomes of Panagarolaimus kolymaensis, when compared to its living relative Caenorhabditis elegans, revealed many overlapping genes related to surviving challenging conditions.

Curiously, Caenorhabditis elegans is typically found in temperate regions, seeking refuge in decaying fruits or plants. “These findings have implications for our understanding of evolutionary processes, as generation times may be stretched from days to millennia, and long-term survival of individuals can lead to the revitalization of extinct lineages,” the authors of the paper wrote.
