Enrollment in FSA (Flex Spending Account) and Delay in Fund Access
———————————————————–
Last year, I made the decision to enroll in a Flex Spending Account (FSA) as a part of my health insurance plan through my employer. The contribution I made towards the FSA was $1,300, and all the necessary arrangements were made, including payroll deductions. However, despite the account being set up in June of ’22, I was not able to access the funds until just recently, on August 1, 23.
Frustrating Attempts to Resolve the Issue
—————————————
Since September ’22, I made numerous attempts to resolve this issue by reaching out to both my HR Department and my insurance provider. However, instead of finding a solution, I found myself caught in a cycle of blame shifting between the two parties. They continuously pointed fingers at each other, leaving me stuck in a state of limbo with no progress made up until yesterday.
Limited Time Frame for Using Contributions
—————————————–
Now, it turns out that I have until the end of this month to utilize the $1,300 that I contributed to the FSA. The kicker is that I can only use it for claims incurred before May 31, 2023, which unfortunately, I do not have any valid claims to submit.

****** just grabbed a
Hmm. You have a legitimate complaint about the access, but I have to ask. If you wanted to access the money you must have had a reason — like a reimbursement or planned purchase. That doesn’t change now. Receipts can be requested from most providers, including prescriptions — you just have to act fast. Do you wear eyeglasses? — that was out last minute purchase when we fscked up and didn’t spend the money WE chose to put aside. Good luck.
FSA is a grift
You can only carry over $500 per year, so the money will be gone unless you can find something to get reimbursed for. I suggest you look into a list of goods that count and see if you can get receipts printed for any you have purchased…things like prescription medicine, bandaids, etc…google IRS Publication 502 for a list.
If you had a trip to the doctor or dentist and had to pay a co-pay that counts. Technically I know the cost of travelling to the doctor for visits counts as well, but I’m not sure how you claim it.
You generally don’t want to put more into an FSA than you are positive you can use in a year. It doesn’t stick around forever like an HSA does, every year it disappears.

Edit to remove OTC meds.
If you’ve had it a whole year how do you not have any expenses to reimburse at all?
