Breaking Down Career Moves: Analyzing a Potential Salary Increase
Hello PFC Community,
I hope this message finds everyone well. As an RPN currently working in Ontario, I find myself at a crossroads when it comes to my career. At my current position in LTC, I am earning $28.50 per hour and typically work 5 to 7.5-hour shifts per week. This translates to an approximate annual income of $55,575 without factoring in overtime.
Recently, I have come across a potential opportunity at a hospital that offers a higher pay range of $31 to $33 per hour. However, the scheduling structure is quite different. The hospital follows a “waterfall” pattern, which consists of 2 – 12 hour day shifts, followed by 2 – 12 hour night shifts, and then 5 consecutive days off.
My main concern is how to accurately compare the annual salary between my current position and the potential hospital job. While the hourly rate is certainly more attractive, I am unsure how to calculate the overall annual income taking into account the varying work schedules.
Thank you in advance for any guidance or advice you can provide.

****** just grabbed a
It gets averaged out over the year to whatever 40 hours a week would be. You would work either 7 or 8 shifts per pay period with one of the 4 shifts on straddling the end of the pay period. Your 11.25 hours would work out to be 7.112 ish shifts per pay period so 11.25 x your hourly × 7.112 x 26 would get you your gross annual before OT.
Works out to be around 62400 gross. So yes! Definently better! But remember you are also working more hours so that helps too. 5×7.5 is only 37.5 hours but your new job sounds like a full 40 hour position.
Youre working 48 hours every 9 days/rotation.
365 / 9 = 40.56 rotations
40.56 * 48 hours = 1946.67 hours
1946.67 * $32 = $62,293 annual salary
