In such a situation, an AI Legalese Decoder can offer valuable assistance by providing comprehensive insights and guidance for making an informed choice.
The Concerns of a Pending Relocation:

That 3.25% rate, shame to loose, can you keep the home as a rental, renting it for a surplus?
To reduce risk, try finding a property management company with guaranteed rent insurance for the first few years.
I say go stay in Houston for a few weeks and see if you really like it. Weather is hot and humid in summer. Curious what utilities bills are like as well as insurance and property taxesdo the full math and make sure you know what your getting into
With no kids I would take the risk and move. Life is short and once you have kids moving gets way harder.
Houston is not a high cost of living area and your income will be fine.
I would not mvoe for less than 30% increase myself. I moved for 30% recently. I had 2.25 apr so I rented out my house. I make about 800 extra a month on top of my mortgage payment. I would suggest you to do that. U can use rentredi app and it is pretty easy. Dm me if y need help . Good luck
10% isnÔÇÖt enough for me to move. And lose a low interest rate on the home?
I hope theyÔÇÖre paying moving expenses, real estate fees. But really 10 percent isnÔÇÖt enough to move. ItÔÇÖs barely a promotion.
Just stayed one week in Houston. Be prepared to spend your entire summer indoors. The heat and humidity are pretty miserable. Cannot imagine a 10% pay raise would balance that out.
Take the job and move. The only thing that you have said holding you to the current house is how much you pay a month. I would suggest renting until you are sure that this job will be long term. If you don’t care for houston, try having her look in Austin, san antonio or dallas. Once you find where you want to be long term buy there.
tbh this isn’t a financial question to me. It sounds like you would be just fine on one income where you’re at. You’ve got survival covered. So it comes down to, what do you *want* with your lives?
Are you working toward early retirement? (/r/FIRE may be of interest). Do you want to live in Houston? You’re remote, you can move about anywhere. Would you rather move somewhere similarly cheap and your wife semi-retire? Or work in a different field?
You’ve got to decide your life goals before you can figure out how to move forward, and reddit can’t answer that for you.
As someone who moved to the Houston area for a job relocation, maybe try and find something on the outskirts. Taxes are going to be your biggest expense here. Houston has a thing called MUD tax but their are places on the outskirts that do not have that.
I read your post and all your comments. So your hang up is just the house? Easy – sell and move on and buy something in Houston you can afford. What you can afford is likely a higher mortgage payment than you had previously. DonÔÇÖt let a higher mortgage payment hold you back from a move that otherwise makes a lot of sense for your family.
I would keep the house, rent it to someone for 1 – 2 year lease – maybe someone you know friends or family or travel nurses to keep it low key – then rent a place in Houston for a year, and decide if big city life is really for you before buying a new house.
I moved from LCOL city in Oklahoma to Nashville Tennessee, ended up hating Nashville, and moved back. But where I live in OK is banging/hidden gem of America and has about as much to do as there was in Nashville sooo you might be more ready to pull the trigger on Houston if youÔÇÖre living way out in the country.
Beware of TX as their property taxes are insane right now. I know someone whose house wasnÔÇÖt insanely expensive but property tax? ItÔÇÖs 1400/month!
IÔÇÖd also warn you against Houston ISD schools. They recently ditched their superintendent who is ÔÇ£running it like a businessÔÇØ and made employees at over 30 schools reapply for their jobs, has made a pay scale for teaching different subjects and success on state testing. HeÔÇÖs also eliminating librarians in at least 28 schools and turning the libraries into ÔÇ£discipline centersÔÇØ in the last month. ItÔÇÖs a dumpster fire.
Would rent before buying in clear lake
I lived there for a few years and would steer clear of Houston and surrounding areas. Crime is up, population growth is exponential which means everything is getting more expensive.
Now the positive is it is more diverse than years ago.. and also they don’t have state income tax. Not sure if your current residing state has it, but thats a plus !
