    Toyota. Corolla. Beige. Engage.

  • deltatux

You can probably still get an old Toyota Matrix or a Pontiac Vibe on the cheap. Don’t let the Pontiac brand fool you, it was a rebadged Toyota Matrix that GM sold but because of the Pontiac brand, could be had for cheaper than getting the same vehicle directly from Toyota.

The Matrix/Vibe is essentially a hatchback Corolla.

  • CompetitiveEmu7583

I haven’t seen anyone mention the Honda Fit. It’s probably going to be cheaper than a Civic or Corolla of the same age & mileage as I doubt you’ll be able to find one of those for $4,000.

You might be able to find an old Vibe for $4,000 since they seem to be cheaper than real Toyotas.

You could also look at some Mazda 2s. Not as good as the older Hondas or Toyotas, but they’ll probably be cheaper.

The problem is that $4,000 doesn’t buy you much of anything good these days… and you’ll need to have money to put into repairs. If you’re looking at an old Civic or Corolla for $4,000 or less, you’re looking at cars that are 15 – 20 years old and 200,000+km on them. Even though they’re good vehicles, anything that old or with that many kilometers could give you problems. So if your budget is $4,000… how much are you able to put towards repairs? If you buy a car for $4,000… are you potential able to spend $2,000 on repairs a few months later?

That’s why the Honda Fit might be the way to go as it should be cheaper than a comparable Civic. Also they’re great on gas and have quite a bit of room if you fold the back seats down.

  • Mun-Mun

Old non rusty mazda 3. second gen probably. First gen is rust bucket. Though you probably can’t get one for less than 6000 unless it’s got a ton of mileage on it.

  • TitrationGod

Pontiac Vibe. You get a Toyota matrix (essentially a Corolla) without paying the Toyota tax.

  • magical_midget

    Have you considered car co-ops?

It would probably be under 200 a month for your usage (assuming 6 hours a week). But you donÔÇÖt have to part with the 4000, and you donÔÇÖt have ongoing maintenance costs. (Probably around 150 a month depending on car age).

You could try for a while and save more money for a newer car too.

  • crh_canada

This is province-specific. Provinces without safety inspections (Quebec, Saskatchewan, Alberta, BC) have access to cheaper cars than those with safeties upon sale (Ontario, Manitoba, Newfoundland) or periodic safeties (Maritimes).

Not everything that causes a car to fail “safety” is inherently unsafe.

  • jandoboy

If you want bit of a swag and a vintage look – Volvo 2**4**0, 7**4**0 or slightly newer looking 9**4**0. Even if they look exactly same, don’t go for 2*6*0. That mid digit is the cylinder#-engine variant. You need a 4 cylinder red-block engine. Google it. They are indestructible.

  • Waste_Magician_1791

There was a guy somewhere on Reddit whose dad had a Yaris he used for commuting. He took a photo of the odometer and it had 599k miles on it. Just saying.

  • OneMileAtATime262

The generally accepted response in this sub is a Beige Corolla preferably at least 12-14 years old.

If youÔÇÖre feeling particularly bougie, seek out a ÔÇ£Champagne MicaÔÇØ or ÔÇ£Sandy Beige MetallicÔÇØ varietal.

  • twobiglemons

As much Accord as you can afford

  • Nervous_Ad1264

    Honda civic or accord

  • random-user-007

Beige corolla is the only right answer

  • colonizetheclouds

    Take a buick pill.

Will run great. Usually driven solely by grandma’s maintained by gramps. Engines on these models are bulletproof.

    2005-2007 toyota yaris

  • BrockLobster

    Ford Focus 05-08

They should be completely depreciated. The 2.0 Duratec is reliable along with the 4F27E transmission. Cheaply built, cheap to maintain.

  • canuckathome

I have a 15 year old Chevy Cobalt. Everyone likes the corolla but this thing is still going good and you can probably get one under 150km for cheap, like 3-4k

  • hindereddinner

I remember the days of the $500 beater ƒÿÑ

Last car cost me $400 plus about $800 in work (bf at the time was a mechanic)

Current car cost me $25k (plus interest and financing and blah blah blah.

  • trustfundkidpdx

    Nissan Leaf

  • jjreason

I got a 2000 camry for 2600 in very good shape. Tires, gas & brakes were all it ever needed from me.

  • C0nniption

Just passed on my ÔÇÿ07 Chevy cobalt to my mom a few months ago. We purchased it in 2021 for $2600 then car needed some steering work (cost us about $800) but otherwise was reliable for occasional driving and was very goos on gas. If you can find one with low Kms it could be an option, but avoid anything thatÔÇÖs been heavily driven.

  • lmancini4

YouÔÇÖd have to go to a 2005-2010 at best Civic but if you can find one would be worth it (theyÔÇÖre tiny tanks, anecdotal but mine saved my life in March), Mazda 3 second gen if you can get your hands on one, same gen Toyota Corollas, some one else has definitely mentioned the Pontiac/toyota connection. If by fluke you can find yourself an Acura in your budget, theyÔÇÖll last like a Honda will.

Wholesale lots are your friend IF you know someone who is mechanically inclined enough to help with repairs.

AVOID the 2009-2014 Ford FocusÔÇÖs if you can, they seemingly lasted like the Mazdas right until their transmissions go. Ford lost a class action lawsuit over the TCM, itÔÇÖs back ordered but covered. You wonÔÇÖt get a loaner even though the lawsuit says you should, and thereÔÇÖs a good chance after sitting at Ford for months not moving youÔÇÖll have issues like brake rot, if itÔÇÖs winter and they salt the lot extra issues. Anecdotal also, but as my Ford sits on the lot after the TCM repair, theyÔÇÖre redoing my brakes, replacing my alternator and battery. The brakes were a month old when it went to them, battery a year old and it definitely had a working alternator when I brought it in. Took 5 attempts for the Adaptive learn to turn on, and they gave me my car back with a battery light on, shaking like a mofo, not shifting, clutches sticking and the check engine light also on but not flashing. I called my mechanic brother to be on standby, made it a km and a bit to a coffee shop where she died in the parking lot and was towed right back to Ford.

  • GenericNetSurfer

Here to echo the calls for Toyota – my advice is be willing to travel for a prospect – if you can expand your search to ~250km within your area you may find better models and the day/overnight trip to get the car will pay off in the long run

  • Marypoppins566

I have an 02 Honda with less than 100k on for less than your price. Michigan, but I’m sure there’s deals to be had on Craigslist

  • RichBlackPrince

    Buy Mazda

  • colonizetheclouds

    Import a JDM vehicle.

Can get under 100k km’s for like $6k landed.

  • rusty_5hackleford

Auto wreckers sell cars they fix up with their parts. If you find a Toyota, Honda or Mazda you should be good for a while.
