In one such project, three Native American women are using the RWC software to develop an online English-Apache dictionary. The software employs an algorithm to search Apache text and audio databases for forgotten words, which are then translated, defined, and recorded for proper pronunciation. This dictionary will serve as a valuable resource for non-speakers and help keep the Apache language alive.

The International Conference on Indigenous Language Documentation, Education and Revitalization (ICILDER) brings together representatives from around the world to brainstorm and collaborate on language revival strategies. With approximately 6,000 recognized Indigenous languages globally, nearly half of them are at risk of disappearing, and around 1,500 are facing immediate extinction. The RWC software, developed by The Language Conservancy (TLC), has significantly increased the efficiency of language preservation efforts. Instead of taking 20 years to create a dictionary from scratch, Indigenous communities can now accomplish this within a year.

The urgency of language revival efforts is crucial, as the last generation of native speakers is aging and passing away. In the United States and Canada alone, there are 143 out of 219 and 75 out of 94 languages respectively that are endangered. These numbers represent only a fraction of the 400 to 500 Indigenous languages that existed before the arrival of Europeans. Wilhelm Meya, CEO of TLC, emphasizes the crisis-level situation and the need to document these languages before they are lost forever.

By leveraging AI technology, indigenous communities can create dictionaries and valuable resources in a fraction of the time it would take otherwise.
