Navigating Employment Challenges at 18
Personal Experience
Hello everyone,
This year has been incredibly challenging for me, as I’ve faced the unfortunate situation of being fired twice. At just 18 years old, the weight of starting the job search over and over again has become overwhelming and frustrating. I feel like I’m stuck in a rut in my life, with no clear direction on how to move forward.
Earlier this year, I was fortunate enough to be enrolled in a building apprenticeship, which I dedicated approximately a year and a half of my life to. Unfortunately, the company that provided this opportunity went under, leaving me without a stable career path. Desperate to find work, I transitioned to a position in the tyre industry. However, after only seven weeks on the job, I received a random text from my boss, letting me know that there was no work available and terminating my employment without any prior warning.
Current Dilemmas and Emotional Strain
Now, I find myself in a precarious situation. It’s frustratingly clear that I’m running out of options. I’ve already applied to numerous job postings across various fields, but without success. Currently, I have enough savings to support myself for just a couple of weeks, and the thought of applying for jobseeker benefits is something I dread. I’ve always believed in standing on my own two feet, and I’m quite determined not to rely on government support.
At this point, I’m questioning whether there are legal avenues I can explore regarding my recent termination from the tyre company. Having a firm understanding of my rights would be beneficial, especially since I was their first employee. If anyone has insights or advice on whether I can take legal action against my former employer, I would greatly appreciate it.

You weren’t fired, you were made redundant.
Subtle difference, but it matters. You get fired for misconduct, you get made redundant by a declining economy.
Talk to your building apprenticeship org, i.e bcito and see if they can help sort another apprenticeship?
Don’t discount the jobseeker benefit option, if you use it to keep yourself afloat while looking for work then you’re doing things right! Lots of us have used that service and move on to long productive careers.
It’s likely the tyre place didn’t use proper process to make you redundant. The legal advice sub can probably help with that but it’s also a hassle and effort to get money from someone that might not have any.
Hey mate,
I’ve been in the same situation in my 20s as well.
I was very against going on the ‘dole’ then, too, but I think for what it’s worth, you should apply for it just to help you get by.
It looks like you are actively searching for a job, and you are keen to work as soon as you can find something.
There is absolutely no shame applying/being on it with the situation you are in.
I hope you find a workplace to help finish that apprenticeship. :]
you paid tax didn’t you? go on the benefit. use it to clear your headspace. make a plan. land a new job
don’t make yourself desperate by not buying yourself a couple of months of space to find something – the benefit is designed to help you bounce back. maybe think about some of the attitudes going around that lead you to think being on a benefit is a failure. We can be a pretty mean community about the poorest among us.
I’ve been where you are. Going on the dole sucks but it gives you breathing room to find something decent so you don’t end up taking the first job that comes along and ending up in a BS job cycle.
I was made redundant while living in Australia and being a kiwi you aren’t eligible for any government support. I had to take many horrible bullshit jobs for nearly 2 years before finding something decent.
Just be thankful you have a safety net in NZ and take the pride hit. It’ll all work out.
If your boss at the tyre company just out-of-the-blue said we don’t have work, don’t come in anymore, you likely have a case to make to the Disputes Tribunal. They would have needed to discuss redundancy and explore options with you.
Not sure if it’s the direction you *should* go in, especially if you think the business is going under. Winning is one thing, collecting is another.
At 18 I would look into Studying, You’ll be getting student benefit rather than job seekers and also upskilling, the economy is shit, or at least try to get back into an apprenticeship program. All the best.
The jobseeker is there to support people while they look for work, why wouldn’t you use it? You’ll be paying taxes for the next 40 years that will more than cover it. They also help you create a good CV and can assist you in your job search, its literally meant for people in your situation.
Keep applying and keep going I had 10 different jobs in my 20’s it can be a blessing not getting stuck in something and diversifying your skill set.
I used to think like you about not wanting to go onto the benefit then someone pointed out that I’ve paid taxes and am going to pay more taxes so it was justified that I get what I’m entitled to. It can be a hit to pride but not being able to pay rent or buy food etc is a bigger hit that lasts longer.
Apply for the jobseeker straight away as there is a 2 week stand down. You’ve paid your taxes as it is a safety net for those exactly in your position. And then maybe try and get sorted with the apprenticeship again as it sounds like you liked it
I had similar issues during GFC. I was a student working in call centers and on two occasions everyone was told to go into carpark at lunchtime and they told us that was it. It was tough but you get through it. You could try labour hire companies or like others suggested get on Job Seekers, that way your case worker might help you find some work. This too will pass.
Mate, if you’ve paid taxes look at the benefit as income protection insurance. Really bad insurance but insurance nonetheless.
Job seeker is there as a tool while you look for a job. Youll be right mate, experiences like these will make you a more empathetic boss later on in life.
When Iwas your age and in between jobs, i found a short course to study and got student allowance. I nrver wanted to rely on the goverment. Yet, I have been a public servant for 22 years now in two digferent careers.
A lot of people talking about going onto the job seekers, and taking the tyre company to the disputes tribunal. My thoughts.
1. Personally I have never been on the job seekers benefit as my parents were always pretty anti it, and encouraged me to work and so I’ve just always found other work relatively quickly, even if it’s not what I want to be doing. (You could talk to temping companies).
2. I don’t know the legalities around how they let you go, but many businesses are doing it pretty tough at the moment, if you were under the 90 day trial and they don’t have any work then you probably don’t have a leg to stand on. Is this also something you want to be doing?
3. It seems like you have the motivation to work, as an 18yo being laid off from 2 jobs hurts, but you should be proud of yourself that you had the jobs the start with. I would try a temping agencies, local Facebook groups, door knocking to try and get something else. Most business may say no, but I’m sure a few would have something for you.
There’s no shame in going on the benefit and using it for exactly what it’s intended for – support in between jobs. Kiwis do give dole bludgers a hard time, but those are people on it for years with no intention of bettering themselves. That’s not you.
WINZ can also help you actually get work. I went on the benefit for like 3 weeks myself before I found work, and I massively helped
Are you in one of our larger cities? Consider moving to a provincial mid size city – some are doing ok and employing still.
Go back to school. Your 18. Learn something you love and follow that.
I pay tax to help people like yourself with things like jobseekers.
I’ve paid enough tax this year to more than cover a few politicians accomodation allowance. I’d much rather it’s used by people who need it.
So don’t feel embarrassed, go for it! Use the jobseekers to stay afloat, and then when you get back into things, pay tax and pay it forward.
Look man, you’re only 18 and a lot of us have been there
Being on the benefit isn’t shameful, it just means times are hard. Me and my siblings have all been on it at some point because we were in the exact situation you are, couldn’t find work. It even helped me get into my current job.
So, go apply to what you’re entitled to, and then look into your options. If your apprenticeship fell through, you should be able to carry some of that over to another company or try get to a trade through polytech. They’re struggling because the housing market is falling but it’ll improve so if that’s still the path you want, you just need to hang in until then.
You’ve done nothing wrong here, things are just a mess right now for most of us so don’t be ashamed of taking the help that’s there.
Go get the job seekers. Suck up that pride, it can be hard.
Then keep hunting and looking. You’re young, think about what you actually want to do otherwise you’re looking down the barrell of 50 years of work you don’t like
Don’t take the benefit mate you are capable of much more than you realise. It’s all about mindset and your integrity at the end of the day
