For everyone who is confused about how the thief seemed to have complete access to this person’s phone, I suggest you check just what you can do on your own phone with only a PIN number (which can be easily seen over someone’s shoulder etc).
It looks like it’s even possible to change your Apple ID password, without entering the existing one, if you have the PIN code. This, to me, is bonkers, as it effectively gives you complete control over the device. It even asks you if you want to log out every other device using that account, so I could make sure you can’t try and lock me out remotely.
In terms of how to access apps? Well, the phone contains everything you need to do alternative logins, even if Face ID is reset – 2FA authenticator apps, password resets via phone and email – pretty much anything you need, you have access to.
The thief will undoubtedly know what apps can be circumvented more easily than others and target them first. There will absolutely 100% be a file available within the naughty community that tells you how to get around every major banking app out there, how to extract personal information from people’s accounts, and how to apply for loans that pay out quickly. Nothing is by chance.
Basically, if someone has access to your phone, they have access to everything. If you ever lose your phone, even if you’re not forced to hand over your PIN (and increasingly, at knife point, this is being demanded), your very next stop is not to the police, it’s to a computer so you can log into iCloud (or google) before the thief does and remote lock the device. Don’t do it after your night out, or ‘in a bit’. Do it immediately.
What we really need is a ‘night out mode’ that gives you a different pin which will only access a subset of features, maybe even lock the rest of the phone so even if you give the proper pin, it’s useless for 24hrs or whatever. Or carry a burner phone that you can hand over when you’re being mugged.

How did someone get onto your phone? Don’t you have it locked?
Contact Santander and ask to speak to the fraud complaints team directly. TheyÔÇÖll be all too eager transfer you, because the advisor wonÔÇÖt really be able to help and will frankly just be glad to get you off their phone. Explain whatÔÇÖs happened and have the complaints team open an appeal into the fraud investigation. Any transactions performed on your account not by yourself are fraudulent and itÔÇÖs SantanderÔÇÖs fault for not stopping them, they have a responsibility to prevent this, and to put it right when it happens.
Also consider CIFAS protective registration. There is a cost for this, but can save you a whole world of headache in the future.
You should get all of your money back, but Santander is right that you will need to work with Zopa and Lendable primarily here. Once they’re all agreed that the loans were fradulaent, then Santander can help more.
I reckon where it might get tricky is what how the remaining funds get split up between the 3 banks… how much do Zopa/Lendable get back from the loans they issued, and how much is Santander on the hook for to return the funds initially in the account before the fraud.

Sorry to tell you this but Santander are AWFUL for dealing with fraud cases. I had someone fraudulently take out a credit card in my name with them and they did nothing about it for months until I filed a complaint.
Get onto their complaints department, get an official response and if that doesnÔÇÖt solve things get onto the ombudsman to help out. You canÔÇÖt go to the Ombudsman until youÔÇÖve made a complaint with the bank, so start there.
