Living Expenses in MA: Seeking Financial Assistance for Middle Class Families
I live in Massachusetts, where my wife and I have a combined income of $91k after pretax deductions. These deductions only include healthcare expenses. While it may sound like a decent amount, we find it challenging to make ends meet with this income, especially considering we have two young children, aged 1 and 4. After accounting for taxes, our monthly take-home pay amounts to approximately $6200.
Childcare and Rent Costs
The biggest hurdles we face are the costs of childcare and rent. Even after extensive research, we could only find childcare services for as low as $2700, which is considered quite affordable in our area. Similarly, our rent, including utilities, amounts to $2200, which is also relatively inexpensive compared to local standards.
Remaining Expenses and Budgeting
With childcare and rent taking a significant portion of our income, we are left with only $1300 to cover all other expenses. Initially, this seemed reasonable, but it quickly becomes apparent that it is inadequate for raising two children. Our monthly budget breakdown looks as follows:
1. Parking: $175
2. Car Payment: $260
3. Groceries (including food, formula, toiletries, diapers): $580
4. Car Insurance: $108
5. Cell Phones: $70
6. Laundry: $25
7. Gas: $100
8. Storage: $95
9. Subscriptions: $13
10. Student loans (currently at $0 due to deferment negotiations): $0 (originally $600/month)
The total expenses amount to $1426, leaving us with a net deficit of $-113. While we recognize that some of our expenses, marked with an asterisk, can potentially be reduced, unforeseen expenses constantly arise, leaving little room for error in our budgeting process.
Seeking Assistance and Considering Tax Adjustments
Given our income bracket, we are open to exploring any potential programs that could assist middle-class families like ours. Despite our income being above the poverty line, we do not qualify for most financial assistance programs. We are also contemplating adjusting our tax withholdings but are uncertain about the best approach to make this work.

I donÔÇÖt know how people do it (or ever did it with having to pay for child care).
I live in MA too. The only way we made it work when our kids were young was he worked during the day and I worked at night.
I stayed up all day with the kids and went to bed when he got home from work.
Our marriage fell apart because we never saw eachother but at least we saved money on child care lol ƒñÀÔÇìÔÖÇ´©Å
The good news is that your oldest will start school soon, and assuming they will be in public school, that cuts your childcare bill in half. My youngest (I have 3 kids) started kindergarten this august and it was a huge weight off my shoulders, not paying that $1000/month in childcare. My husband and I make a combined $110k gross and live in a HCOL area in the PNW. Other things that helped: I volunteer twice a week to help with phones and payments at my sonÔÇÖs karate studio in exchange for his free lessons. My 11 year old daughter mucks horse stalls once a week in exchange for her free riding lessons. My state has a 10 cents bottle deposit, so with our bossÔÇÖ permission we both set up recycling bins at our office and turn in cans and bottles once a month for about $150/month (he works in a trade so during the hot summer months he gets quite a few empty water bottles saved up!). I have friends with older children who used to take their clothes to the local clothing exchange, where they pay them Pennies on the dollar for old clothes. I offered to pay them double for their bags of nice clothes for my younger children (instead of them getting paid $20/trash bag, I give them $40, which is still a steal for me!). I buy almost everything off brand, I coupon, and I use the envelope saving method. When you pay off your cars, just keep them and donÔÇÖt upgrade! Having no car payments is such a great feeling, and nobody cares what you drive if it just gets you from work to home and to the grocery store. Maybe IÔÇÖm too frugal, but we have a really nice house in a really nice part of town, and we own our cars outright, so we live below our means and can afford the other nice ÔÇ£wantsÔÇØ because of it. Good luck to you!
Can you get rid of the storage unit?
Is your car good enough to drive uber? A few hours here and there (evenings?) could make things a bit more comfortable, especially if you are close to boston where drivers make more. If the average mass uber pay is around 23.50 an hour you can cover your net loss with 5-10 total hours per month, and god knows Boston needs more taxis on friday and saturday evenings when the bars close after the trains stop. Just a thought.
I’ve also heard of families chipping in to help with childcare of a group of kids, so something like 3-4 sets of parents combine for childcare with one parent working 4 days a week and watching all the kids the other day. This obviously works better when the kids are a bit older and your work has more flexible hours, but possibly something to think of if the choice is between four families spending 10k+ per month vs one parent watching the kids one day per week.
I know you’re looking for quick fixes OP, but at the end of the day you are making MCOL incomes in a HCOL area and from your mention of student loans, at least one if not both of you went to college. Can you expand on why your combined incomes are a bit lower than you would expect for your area? Are you both in dream fields?
Do you normally get a big tax return? Because you need money now, consider recalculating how much you have taken out of your paychecks based on 2 kids & rebates to see if you can increase your take home pay by 20-30 each. Not a huge amount, but every penny counts. IÔÇÖm assuming your oldest is in part time or full time pre-K with before/after care? Obviously thereÔÇÖs not much you can do if you donÔÇÖt have trusted friends and family to help with pickups and the like. Have you looked into plasma donation that offers some compensation? Could be a nice break every few weeks for a parent to sit alone for a few hours on a Saturday and earn some cash.
Finally, you may qualify for food assistance in your area. Food banks arenÔÇÖt just for the very poorÔÇötheyÔÇÖre also for those who need just a little extra help to make ends meet. Local churches and community organizations are your best bet, or other regional government programs. IÔÇÖm not from the area so I canÔÇÖt suggest anything in particular.
Need to really work on increasing income

Probably just go into debt for a year until you can significantly reduce childcare expenses since after school care is usually a big savings over full time daycare plus price may drop at age 2. Get a credit card with 12-18 months at 0%. Pay what you can each month (you don’t want to just run it up like it doesn’t matter since you’re using it to defer payments interest free), then pay it off in the fall.

I can’t comprehend those child care costs. I’m in Houston and thought $270 a week was bad.
I donÔÇÖt have much advice but maybe look at r/frugal to find ways to save more money on things like groceries and such
I live in Southern California and one of the biggest things that helped us out while the kids were young was to work opposite schedules. I worked during the day and my husband worked at night. It sucked, but we didnÔÇÖt have to pay for daycare for 2 kids. He switched back to a regular schedule once our daughters were both in regular school full time.
Another suggestion is to do something like Instacart during your free time to pick up some extra funds to help bring you out of the negative each month.
Would your wife be open to staying home and maybe watching a couple kids during the day to bring in some extra funds while she also stays home?
Side note: I have no clue how you guys are managing on $580 a month for groceries, but bravo. We canÔÇÖt seem to get our grocery bill under $1200 a month, but prices out here in So Cal might be a bit higher than everywhere else ƒÑ┤
Good luck!
Use a dependent care FSA if you have it that will save you on taxes. 74k with 4 people IÔÇÖd working poor on the MIT calculator. Under withhold on your taxes. You will need three years of daycare for the 1 year old. $643 for a car is $22 a day.
DonÔÇÖt waste time with Uber the wear and tear on the car isnÔÇÖt worth it.
You need to increase income, have your wife work on the weekends while you watch the kids.

How is transit where you live? Could you reduce your fuel costs by taking transit to work!
Middle class are screwed rn. I don’t what else to say. But you’re not alone. Same boat.
Childcare is necessary only if the lower income of the couple makes more aftertax than the childcare costs.
91K combined income is a bit low for todayÔÇÖs standards, unfortunately. YouÔÇÖll both have to try to increase your income, maybe job hop? That seems to help many professionals.
Childcare is a pain, and thereÔÇÖs not much to do about it. Some jobs have programs where youÔÇÖre able to pay portion of your monthly tuition with pre-taxed income. ItÔÇÖs honestly not that big of a savings but itÔÇÖs a little something.
Other than that, since youÔÇÖre not high earners, maybe one of you can change your shift to work nights so that you donÔÇÖt pay for daycare?
does your U have a food pantry? If so, see if you can get food there.
Reach out to your insurance company to see if there is a low milage deduction, as you will not be driving your car much.
It may actually be better for one of you to take a break from full-time work and stay home with the kids until both kids are in school full-time. Run the numbers. After FICA, the increased marginal income tax you are paying on the second income, child care, commuting/gas/car wear and tear, work clothes, work lunches – what’s the real net income of the lowest paid spouse? Whoever stays home with the kids can also pick up some cash pet walking, babysitting a neighborhood kid, etc. That also gives more flexibility to the higher paid spouse to move up quicker and earn more, work overtime (which may pay more), etc. The issue there, however, is that you lose earning potential by staying home for a few years.
There is no assistance. No good answers either. Some options:
1- work alternating schedules to save on childcare
2- move to a cheaper apartment
3- get a second job
One of you should consider not working until the oldest kid is old enough to legally be home alone to babysit.
YouÔÇÖll save money and also the children will get the best attention from a parent
You’re paying almost 3k in childcare every month, I’d look into the one making less possibly staying home until both kids are in school.
You could probably cut the car expenses and walk every where, but can you? Going without a car is gonna be tough. And even then there is still not much of a buffer there.
Honestly, you guys have chosen to live in an HCOL with kids. It looks like you need to make more money if you are gonna stay there.
That isn’t enough to have kids. You shouldn’t have them. My partner and I make double that in a MCOL and have ruled out kids as too expensive.
That’s the neat part, you don’t.
Does either kid have a disability? If so, your income will qualify you for a childcare voucher (max of 110k/year for families where a child has a disability). Call 211 if it’s a possibility.

I live in MA and if your in easternMA you maybe should look at relocating to central or western MA .. in western MA my money goes much further I still struggling with kids and all but eastern MA daycare was absolutely insane and 91k combined itÔÇÖs tough out there compared to western ma where itÔÇÖs manageable
if you are a post-doc can you look into ANY benefits/perks/assistance the school can provide such as rent (not sure if you could get anything cheaper, but doesn’t hurt to investigate), insurance (both property and health), food assistance etc? Can your wife skip whatever her day job is and stay home with the kids and maybe do uber eats with the car at night and you can use public transit to school for your post-doc position? I’d also suggest one or the both of you get on heavy duty bc (like, vasectomy or IUD) and try and sell just about everything in the storage unit to make $$$ and get rid of that bill.
Dude, youve got to get your income up and or expenses down. If that means moving to a lower cost area so be it. If that means getting a new job that’s what you’ve got to do. I see so many people living in a high cost area living paycheck to paycheck. What’s the draw to this area? There’s so many great places to live that are so cheap and still very nice!
Have someone stay home with the kids and see if you qualify for programs to help?
