## Recommendation for Bank Account for someone living overseas with strong connections
Hello,
What bank account would you recommend for someone who has moved overseas but still maintaining a strong connection, frequent visits, property, family, etc?
Added: I also have a PR and a Japanese address.
Seems like FX transactions at major banks are pretty expensive these days and maybe people are using Wise. No issues with that.
Sometimes domestic transfers are necessary, and these may be difficult to do if you have an overseas address on your account due to restrictions, but I can use my local address just wondering which bank is good. Any tips on that?
Many thanks in advance.

I know several people who moved overseas for whom Prestia agreed to keep an open account.
As long as you’ve still got a Japanese address and a valid residence card, SMBC Olive’s domestic transfer function works pretty well on their phone app and you get three free transfers a month.
Yucho seems to be one of the strict brick and mortar banks, I’d suggest one of the recommended neobanks.
SMBC Prestia.
They accept existing account holders to move out to Japan, unlike other FIs.
You will maintain online banking, and can transfer to oversea bank accounts if under the same name. And there is no maximum limit of the amount.
Keep in mind that you will need to be living in Japan when you open an account. Only if you have existing, then it can accept moving out.
As long as your PR is valid and you have valid address in Japan it should be ok.
As I understood you need be in Japan at least once every year to keep PR valid. And banks will do random checks by sending post card to your address. if you clear those without issues, you should be able to keep any bank account in Japan.
I use shinsei bank and their FX is cheap. If you are higher rank, you get some free foreign transfers too. Previous fees were 0.5% and transfer fee is 4k JPY if you dont qualify for free transfer overseas. I mean 0.5% for fx. and domestic transfers can be free a few times per month also based on your rank
If your residence card is still active and you keep an address where you receive mail you can likely keep it open until your residence card expires.
Pretty sure you are trying to do the impossible.
Use a proper foreign bank with little to no conversion fees. Japanese banks are trash, I use mine to get my payroll and pay bills and everything left goes out as soon as the month is over.
