I have a large percentage of my investments in one particular security, which I realize is unwise. I’d like to diversify but am worried about paying a large amount of capital gains. How do people handle this? Just diversify a little at a time?
I have both a Retirement Contribution Plan & a 401k Retirement Plan through the company I work for. When I first started they used the Retirement Contribution Plan (pension-like model I think). Shortly after starting they switched to 401k. The majority of my time at company / my money is in the 401k plan.
They recently enabled the Retirement Contribution Plan to allow us to select the fund(s) we invest in for that account.
It is currently / has always been invested in “Global Diversified” which is described as “Blended Fund Investments” (Asset Class) & “Asset Allocation” (Category).
* 1 year 8.94%
* 3 year 4.06%
* 5 year 6.74%
* 10 year/LOF 6.37%
There are a variety of “Blended” & “Core” Funds I can choose from. The one that looks to be performing best is the “FID GR CO POOL CL S” – “Stock Investments” – “Large Cap Growth.”
* 1 year 39.22%
* 3 year 9.90%
* 5 year 24.13%
* 10 year/LOF 19.10%
Why should I (or not) switch to the better performing large cap growth fund? I assume I need to think about how many years until I retire (15-20), level of risk, etc. But I don’t know enough to make an informed decision. Even the RC Target Date 2040 / 2045 Funds seem to be performing better than the Global Diversified.
I’m 41. I opened a Roth IRA in March 2021. I have all my contributions invested in a mix of ETFs and mutual funds.
That said, I’ve encountered some medical bills and other life events that have me considering selling part of my Roth to pay my expenses. My question is: **Can I do so without incurring a penalty // taxes?** It’s my understanding that if I withdraw only the amount I put in, I’d be in the clear despite my age and length of IRA ownership.
Does it matter that my money has been tied up in ETFs/MFs? For example, say my cost basis is 10,000 but my market value is 12,000… so long as I leave 2,000 in the Roth, would I avoid the penalty // taxes? Or, do I need to pay attention to selling particular ETF/MF lots?
This feels like it ought to be an easy answer, but here we are. I appreciate any insight the hivemind can provide.
Okay, I’ll bite. (edited)
If my dad is retired, with $1M in taxable 401Ks, is there an advantage to converting it all to Roth IRAs, and if so, all at once, $100K every year for 10 years, some other strategy?
If there is other info needed, just assume something, and note how much of an impact that has to the answer. i.e., is he married (yes), other income (SS $40K), standard or itemized deduction (standard), taxable US state (yes 5%), …
