History of Coke Bottling Plant

The Papa DelÔÇÖs Pizza Factory at 1201 S. Neil St. in Champaign once housed the Coca-Cola bottling plant. Built in 1938, the Art Deco building continued to operate as a bottling plant until the mid-1970s, leaving behind a legacy of community memories. The plant was part of a standardized plan introduced by the Coca-Cola Company, offering an economical and efficient way to construct factories nationwide. Despite its closure, the building served various purposes over the years, from an auto supply store to a popular restaurant and bar. In 2016, the building was acquired by Bob Monti, owner of Papa DelÔÇÖs, who consolidated all of their dining and delivery operations there.

City Building Bunker

A reader inquired about the construction of a bunker in the basement of the Champaign City Building. During the mid-1980s renovation, the lower level was adapted as an Emergency Operation Center (EOC) to manage large-scale emergencies. The EOC was eventually moved to the Champaign County Emergency Management Agency for increased efficiencies and interagency collaboration. Furthermore, it was revealed that the University of Illinois (UI) also has its EOC in development to enhance emergency response capabilities.
