## Current Financial Situation and Concerns
I Travel 4 Weeks On and 1 Week Off for Work
I have a unique work schedule that involves traveling for four weeks and then having one week off. During this time, I do not rent or have a physical address, except for the PO Box that I have paid for. My hourly rate is $34, but I receive a 10-15% raise when I am working on the road for those four weeks. If I choose to work during my one week off at my home site, I make $34 flat per hour. Additionally, I receive a per diem based on the GSA rate, which is usually around $150 a day, but I typically receive $160-200 a day due to being on the West Coast. I also receive $1,000 a month in VA disability benefits.
## Current Savings and Investments
I have $20,000 in a high-yield savings account, $20,000 in my checking account, and contribute around 15% to my 401k. However, I am unable to invest in stocks due to not having a physical address. I am considering renting a room to potentially address this limitation, but the cost of living in California is high. I am unsure of the best course of action to manage my finances effectively.
## Monthly Expenses
My monthly expenses include:
– Airbnb/hotel costs (highest around $1,500, usually lower)
– Storage unit ($170)
– Car insurance ($140)
– Netflix/gym membership ($35)
– P.O. Box annual fee ($300)
– I do not pay for gas, as I use a company truck.
## Debt-Free Status
I am proud to say that I am debt-free.

If you have a friend or family member use their address if you can. Why does your address have to be in California? Why not use the address that’s on your ID
> Cant really invest into stocks since I dont have a physical adress.
Yes you can. You need a PMB(Postal Mail Box) in your home state where your DL is. This will give you a legal address that’s not a PO Box, and should only cost you tends of dollars a month. Sometimes also called a private mailbox.
You want one that requires you to file USPS Form 1853. That means they follow USPS rules and regulations.
I personally have used: https://www.virtualpostmail.com/pricing/virtual-mailbox/ with good success, but there are tons of options.
Full time RV people(sometimes called snowbirds) do this all the time. Escapees is well known in the RV world, and they have a pretty nice blog about how it all works here: https://escapees.com/what-is-an-rv-mail-forwarding-service/. (They also offer mail forwarding services for a few RV friendly states).
Also, since you don’t really live in CA, you can move to any other state, perhaps one without a state income tax, and save yourself some dough! 🙂
Another option is to just use your parent’s or other siblings address. This is what I currently do(use my sisters address). Bonus: It’s free!
> Debt free btw
Good, keep it up.
Use a virtual office if you want to open a brokerage etc
The priority is first to maximize 401k and IRA. If you still have extra saved, put in HYSA and you will decide later – don’t keep it in Checkings as the gain is very little.
The idea to rent a room I found it smart, just find a place where you are arriving more often but not too expensive place. You can move the stuff from the storage there, you can close the p.o. box there, too, so you will save some money from these, too.
Can a friend or co-worker “rent” you a room? Maybe offer to pay them the cost of your PO Box?
I was offered this years ago by a friend in order to cheat the system and avoid the higher taxes on car tabs since he lived outside the metro area. (I declined, it felt like fraud.)
This is crazy and feels like discrimination to me. I’d love for an attorney to chime in. WTF. If you are nomadic or homeless, you are denied financial management options?!
Wow, it sounds like you have a unique situation with your work schedule and living arrangements. Have you thought about looking into alternative housing options like tiny homes or van life to save on rent costs? It could be a fun and adventurous way to continue saving and investing your money! Good luck!
