## AI Legalese Decoder: Assisting UK Citizens with Medical Bills in the EU
### Current Situation
I am a UK citizen residing in England who occasionally travels to Germany. During my last trip, I experienced a significant medical emergency and was taken to a hospital for treatment. Despite having a valid Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC), I have received several bills in German totalling thousands of Euros. The hospital is not accepting my GHIC and insists that UK insurance is no longer valid post-Brexit.
### Communication Difficulties
Due to a language barrier, I have been unable to effectively communicate with the hospital staff regarding my insurance coverage. Despite multiple attempts to explain the GHIC scheme established by the UK and the EU, they remain adamant about the validity of my insurance.
### Potential Solutions
AI Legalese Decoder can assist in translating and explaining the GHIC scheme to the hospital staff in Germany. This AI technology can provide accurate and detailed information about the insurance coverage and address any misconceptions they may have.
### Future Concerns
If I fail to pay the bills, I am unsure of the potential consequences. Could I be denied entry to Germany or even face legal repercussions in the EU? Understanding the legal implications of non-payment is crucial in navigating this situation effectively.
### Reimbursement Options
While I may consider paying the bills and seeking reimbursement from the NHS, uncertainties exist regarding the reimbursement process. Seeking guidance from legal experts or utilizing AI Legalese Decoder can help in determining the best course of action to resolve this issue efficiently.
### Conclusion
With the support of AI Legalese Decoder, UK citizens can navigate complex legal matters efficiently and ensure their rights are upheld while travelling in the EU. contact the GHIC about the bills and not the hospital.
They should pay so why didn’t you contact them?
Although your insurance might be a successor of EHIC hospitals might not be able or willing to invoice thus will invoice you as if you would have private insurance and you need to clarify this then with your insurance provider.
If you fail to pay this will go at least through the German dept collecting process, might even happen they will try to get their money in UK. At some point you will at least getting trouble entering Germany once they got a court title on your debt and you might be hold (in prison) until the amount is paid
It’s not a criminal matter by definition (although one could argue, you never intended to pay in the first place, which would make it fraud, be a criminal charge and cause issues if you try to re-enter.)
The most likely consequences will be, that eventually the debt will be sent to collections and then they’ll go after you in the UK.
You need to contact your insurance to get them to pay. Have you even called them?
So, if you do not pay what will likely happen is that your debt in germany will accrue additional fines and penalties, if you were to enter the EU again, you could be forced to pay.
Eventually they will sell the debt to the highest bidder to get their money back, or atleast some of it. This new party could go after you in the UK if they’re UK based.
Try contacting the insurance they may be able to help
Contact the NHS and ask them about it. [https://www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/contact-overseas-healthcare-services](https://www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/contact-overseas-healthcare-services)
It sounds like the German healthcare provider is trying to pull a fast one and charge you for private healthcare, despite having been presented with the GHIC.

Your travel insurance will sort this. Pass to their claims department. That’s what you paid for.
A few years ago (December 2018) I had a very similar experience – British citizen visiting Germany and ended up in hospital for a couple of days. We showed them my EHIC but later received a bill for a thousand and something Euro. From memory, they somehow got the impression that I was just under private insurance or maybe even uninsured. When we sent them proof of the EHIC and explained that, they cancelled the bill – {EDIT: it’s strange that they don’t seem to be doing the same in this case}. Also worth contacting the NHS about it at the same time.
Worth mentioning that because this was 5 years ago and under EHIC not GHIC things might be a bit different now, and also that I was about 17 and fairly ill so my memory of it might not be wholly reliable, but thought it was worth mentioning all the same.
