You don’t *have* to use a solicitor to execute a will.
If you think executing the will is going to be complex, or your siblings are going to contest, then I would definitely engage a solicitor to “be seen” to be doing everything by the book, crossing every t and dotting every i.
Small town? I’d choose a solicitor who can be impartial – like from another town, an hour away. (geez, had a hard time even finding a solicitor when buying a house that wasn’t somehow involved with the vendor, so I feel your concern).
Go to current solicitor (who I assume is holding the will), put on your “executor” hat, collect the will. Run to new solicitor.
Use a solicitor that specialises in wills and estates. Don’t try and do it yourself if there is any complexity to his estate.
You can select your own solicitor.
Use your own as otherwise there will be a conflict of interest

AFAIK You don’t have to use a solicitor, but if you want to you can select one.
As executor you can choose the best method to discharge your duties including finding the most appropriate legal and financial professionals if required.
> Can already see my siblings are going to contest
> It’s a very small town, too many conflict of interests
See every single solicitor in town for an initial consultation to conflict them out, then go with your preferred solicitor. 😈
