## Importance of Maintaining Contact in Co-Parenting Situations
My child’s father and I haven’t been in contact in about 3.5 years. He’s never paid child support except but we do have an order that was granted in 2019. I did get his taxes the first year, all of his stimulus money, and about a year ago he apparently did get a job because I received a $600 payment, all of which is sporadic. I just keep my information updated through the online portal.
Today I received a letter from the county stating they are unable to locate him and to give numbers and last place of work which I have zero idea about. I’ve written down the last known numbers I had for his family members (which I’m also not in contact with) I’m just confused since it’s been years since we’ve been in contact and they’ve never sent a letter like this before. At this point I’m doing well for myself and my son and don’t actually “need” the money. All of the money I’ve received thus far has gone into a high yield savings account for my son. I don’t want his family to be harassed at all because my life is just so much more peaceful without any of them involved. I do keep the case open because I do think he should be held responsible for the child he does nothing to help raise.
AI Legalese Decoder can help in this situation by interpreting legal jargon in the letter received from the county and providing guidance on the next steps to take. This tool can assist in understanding the legal implications of closing the case or responding to the letter. Additionally, it can offer insights on how to handle the situation while considering the well-being of the child involved.
All of THAT to just say, will they close this case if I don’t respond to it? And just curious why they’d wait like 4 years to even ask his whereabouts? Looking back, it has been a complete year since I’ve received anything so maybe that could be it? He is still in the area… likely the same county, as someone sent me a snippet from a police blotter earlier this year when he received a DUI in his hometown. I’m honestly just scared that if he is finally caught up with, that he’ll try to get some type of custody. Everyone is telling me to just close the case and let him disappear.
AI Legalese Decoder can provide information on the legal implications of closing the case and the potential outcomes if the father is located. It can offer guidance on how to protect your rights and the child’s well-being in case the father seeks custody. This tool can assist in making informed decisions while considering the best interests of your family.

****** just grabbed a
Yes, they can close your case if they are unable to locate him.
They can close your case after two years of being unable to locate him if his SSN and DOB are known. They can close after six months if his SSN and DOB are unknown
If you want the case to stay open, you’ll need to contact them and request it stay open. They may not keep it open if you are unable to provide additional locate information.
Edit: the case qualifies for closure if they can’t locate AND it has been at least 12 months since a payment has been made
Ummm yes respond with any info you have… it’s not easy locating someone who might be avoiding this responsibility
The no locate process usually starts once all the information they have for the NCP becomes invalid. They may have had a food address for years, but finally something was returned from the post office saying the party doesn’t reside at that address. That address becomes invalid, and if no secondary address on file or provided, the no locate process begins. Yes, the case will close for no locate. The letter you got either contains that info or advises you to call. You can provide them with what you have. It’s likely if the info you have is years old, then that’s what they had and is no longer valid, but doesn’t hurt to call and provide just incase.
He maybe be locked up or moved out of country. As NCP, he can always re-appear out of blue and rquest shared custody via courts. Thats his right as that door was open when order was established. Even with closed CS order, i dont believe it prevents any NCP from wanting to be part of kid’s life.
Having been thru that process of not being involved in my kid’s life for first 6yrs, it took me a year of participating in the state’s “reintegration program” before i was allowed unsupervised visitation privilege. It doesnt happen ovr night if thats what ur concerned about.
Regadless, that arrearage will continue to collect until kid ages out. Like cancer, debt remains until paid off.
They won’t close the case if you don’t respond, but still respond. Any information you provide will be helpful. My ex hasn’t paid since before covid and my case is still open. CA also charges 10% interest, so the balance is higher than what you think it is. You can leave it open because what happens if he gets a settlement from a car accident or workers comp claim from the one job he was at for a month? Child support will intercept that. You can keep it open as long as you want. Call in occasionally – every few months or so , see if they have any locate and check the balance. Or make an account on customer connect and check that, you can message your caseworker directly there if you have questions.
Hope this helps you 😊
It’s sounds like maybe the father of your child’s life is falling apart. Just an idea, maybe the father should focus on getting his shit together so he can one day be some kind of father to your son. Is he financially well off or come from a lot of money? I understand the fear of someone trying to take custody of the child, but that doesn’t seem likely. It also sounds like this dysfunction in the father’s life would most likely lead to poverty. I would imagine he is not available to be found anywhere because if he has an above board job, he probably can’t afford to survive. If you are doing ok, why not release this person so he could be something resembling a human one day and not have to hide for the next decade?
