AI Legalese Decoder: Helping You Make Informed Financial Decisions

Current Situation: Significant Investments in Term Deposits

At present, I am in touch with a group of individuals who have wisely invested $1.3 million in various term deposits, with an average return of 5.5%. This has allowed them to accumulate a significant amount of savings while remaining debt-free. As they approach their preferred retirement age of 60, they are now considering whether to leave their funds in these term deposits or explore alternative investment options.

Considering Future Financial Goals

With retirement just three years away, it is crucial for them to carefully evaluate their financial strategy. They must decide whether to maintain their current investment approach or consider reallocating their funds into potentially higher-yielding opportunities. This is a crucial decision that could significantly impact their financial security and overall retirement plans.

Exploring Investment Options: Shares, ETFs, or Property

One potential investment avenue they are considering is the stock market, either by investing in individual shares or through exchange-traded funds (ETFs). However, they are also contemplating the prospect of venturing into the property market. Given their substantial equity and stable employment, purchasing a property while they can easily obtain a loan is an appealing option. Nonetheless, they are seeking guidance on the potential returns and risks associated with each investment avenue.

With $1.3m liquid plus assets I suggest you go talk to a professional..

  • Muter

3 years and wanting some certainty on how much youÔÇÖll have?

Basic answer is TD seems right.

More complex answer is to budget out the next 5-7 years and keep that budgeted amount in TD. The rest can be staggered into more higher risk investments. They potentially have 20-30 years left, so thereÔÇÖs still some returns to be made, but it is absolutely best to have some certainty on the next 10 years funds and knowing that it wonÔÇÖt be eroded by a market slump

  • dyingPretty

I’m entering retirement with a 80% stock 20% bond portfolio. Term deposits are not going to be survivable long therm.

  • erotic-lighter

    – Average returns on residential are around 3% much less than a TD. This is if you bank on the value rising. (Current conditions)

    – Commercial is around 5% but requires high equity. Not sure if thereÔÇÖs much worth while thatÔÇÖs under 2M

    – possibly split 70% TD and 30% ETFs.

  • aDarkDarkNight

What terms are you choosing? I am in a similar situation and are locking mine all in at 5 years in the logic that TD rates will drop by more than I would make by taking the higher rate for a shorter time. If you follow me. Of course thatÔÇÖs pure guesswork. I am also looking at a private finance company called Generalfinance who offers TD about 40% higher than bank, although of course at more risk that a normal bank. IÔÇÖm going to put 10% into one of those. 7.55% for 5 years

  • realdjjmc

Lock in as many long term 6%+ TD’s as you can.

  • WealthandFIRE

Keeping it in term deposits will erode it due to current high inflation.

As you are close to retirement, you probably want a low risk option.

Investment property won’t give you much yield (around 4 to 6% gross) so with $1.3 mil that won’t really be much once you take expenses and tax.

Perhaps an index fund or ETF? Although if you take the 4% withdrawal rule, it will just be $52k before tax. But if you add superannuation, you may be ok? Depends on your expenses

Brah if folk have that kinda money they can afford pro advisor than going on this sub for pro bono advice lol ƒñú

  • steev506

Go talk to some professionals. I’ve spoken to a few in New Zealand and the only one I would recommend is the Private Office.

  • kiwi_keith

Cash is a great investment return right now especially so close to retirement Рif you only have a 3 yr horizon, stocks are a little risky in anything under 10 yrs in an ideal scenario maybe split this risk 50/50?

  • Champion_Kind_Sports

Personally it’s none of your business, it’s theirs.

Amazing how many people on this sub stick their nose into other peoples finances.

  • lilbitslutty91

Whatever you do, make sure you enjoy some of that money. You’re literally about to retire, I don’t care if you live to 100. It’s time to start living and enjoying years of hard work

  • madmlem

Echo the comments to talk to someone.

One key point is that asset allocation should get more conservative as you age. The suggestions that you should be practically all in on equities doesn’t align with a shortening time horizon in late life. You have one major drawdown at the wrong time and your asset base won’t recover

  • 2000papillions

People tend to live much much longer than 60 years old these days. I would still want some growth assets in there to power the earnings for years to come, such as stocks or property.

  • Jolly_Dragonfruit838

Would you be prepared for volatility and see your funds disappear. Keep the money in the bank and sleep easy.
