This happened to me with my AMEX card before – the post office refused to give me my card because of the security level AMEX requested which stipulates a photo ID where the name matches the addressee. Unfortunately I have no photo ID where my name is written in katakana like it was on the envelope.
I had to call AMEX, who then issued me a new card with my name printed in romaji on the envelope. I think they also removed the security level so I did not have to show photo ID.
It is very likely that you will never get that first card handed to you.
Happened to me. I had called customer service and explained the situation. They then said they’ll revise the naming on the mailing envelope to be ROMAJI and resend. This happened three times 🫠🤬
Eventually just said fuck it and applied for an AMEX card with zero issues. Great customer service too.
Iv been stuck in this loop for three months trying to get anypass and Mercari to give me my money. They refuse to accept my name even though my bank has my katakana registered as well.
Get Rakuten to resend it with Romaji?
There’s no real other answer than you having to call Rakuten, speak to a customer support rep, slowly repeat your entire name as written exactly on your zairyuu card, and then they’ll resend it. It happened to me too. If you can’t speak Japanese either ask if anyone speaks English by any chance, or ask a friend who can speak Japanese, or have google translate pulled up and a list of pre-searched phrases like “the credit card name doesn’t match my zairyuu card, can I change it”
I had the issue when my name was cut off (last letter missing)
However, the fact my middle names were left out was never an issue, as long as the names that are on the envelope can be found on the ID with the same spelling.
Don’t go to the post office. Have them redeliver it. That staff might not care.
Or call them.
The last 2 I got I had to send them photocopies of my ID. The letters still had katakana but I just had to sign the paper to get them.
I had the same problem, had to call Rakuten, some number where they had English customer service, forgot the process, but card was mailed to me somehow. I remember how stupid rakuten system was, when they mailed a card knowing I wouldn’t be able to receive it.
Oh, some memory coming back. First they mailed me another letter, and I had to make a copy of my Id’s to mail back to them, then I think they mailed a card either with no need to sign, or with my proper name. All this took a few weeks, so I missed some bonus for signing up for the rakuten card!
I also had heaps of different problems with them due to name mismatches – that they did! Some still not solved, 1 year later! So frustrating with language here!
In the future, you can register a 通称 and have it printed in your my number card.
I had this issue but bc their envelope didn’t have my middle name. I had to call the English number then wait for them to call back and then they sent me a different letter that didn’t have to have a signed delivery but I had to send copies of my ward registration (easy download at conbini if you have a myna). Then they sent me my card in an envelope that wasn’t signed delivery
I must’ve dodged a bullet, when my card was delivered in December they didn’t check my ID at all
Recently, I received my daughter’s credit card (not Rakuten). There was no problem at all; I didn’t even show any ID and I am clearly not the person to which the letter was addressed. Which I consider a security breach, actually.
My point being that it might depend on the person who delivers the card.

It’s not because your residence card is in romaji, it’s because you didn’t apply using the spelling of your name that matches your residence card. Call them and get it sorted out, but some people end up having their previously-approved cards canceled when they have to do this.
FYI, I just got a news article that the government will likely give more options on some documents, like adding Kakatana (and/or western letters) to the My Number card if wanted, so you can show the correct name:
