## Inheritance Situation: Financial Struggles for a Teenager
My friend recently lost their grandmother, who left them a $4k inheritance. However, my friend is only 17 years old and will not be able to access the funds until they turn 18 in a few months. The money was meant to be used towards purchasing a car.
The situation took a turn when my friend’s uncle, who received a significant portion of the inheritance, decided to gift some of it to my friend and their sibling. Despite this generous gesture, my friend’s mother has informed them that the money will not be handed over upon turning 18. Instead, their mother wants them to agree on how the inheritance will be spent before releasing the funds.
Adding to their financial stress, my friend’s mother is already making them pay for their school fees at TAFE, which amount to $200 per week. Additionally, my friend will soon have to start paying rent. With a part-time job that offers limited hours and some financial assistance from Centrelink, my friend is still struggling to make ends meet. They are losing approximately $100 from their savings each week, which makes the inheritance even more crucial.

Was it in a will? If so you don’t need to wait until they turn 18. Just tell their mum they’re literally breaking the law.
If no will, then yeah, rip your friends.
I’m confused, is this the 4k that the grandparents left in their will, or a separate amount gifted to them via their mother and uncle.
Honestly, it sounds as though the Mother has a sensible plan.
Savings accounts are for when your life expenses are higher than your income. An inheritance is completely different, and should be used to set yourself up for the future (such as a car)
The mother actually sounds very sensible – she doesn’t want your friend wasting the $4k, but to use it for a purpose such as a car. If your friend uses it to pay for tafe etc, how will they buy a car?
It is very rare for a $4k car to not need additional substantial repairs. Your friends mum is correct in asking friend to identify what they want to use the money for, as for how friend is “made” to contribute towards their expenses, do you know what the friends actual family finances are to make judgements about how the family is handling their finances or are you just on the outside looking in?
Honestly, give an 18 year old a good chunk of money and 99 times out of 100 it’s gonna be wasted. May as well chill out for a few years, it’ll all be the same in the long run.
Doesn’t want to give money to a child with little to zero plans for it. Makes sense really
