It’s a mobile cheque deposit. They don’t know it’s a government cheque unless a human being looks at it.
Switch to direct deposits
First $100 needs to be made available on the first business day when deposited at an ATM or mobile. These are the rules the financial institutions must follow.

Those who say they can’t tell it’s a government cheque over mobile deposit are wrong. The scanners have the capability to recognize the MICR line written at the bottom and we could automatically recognize the amounts written in both legal and courtesy form. I even built some demos that would show detecting the bill payee at the ATMs. ( those were a pain to make it work reliably because we don’t have a standard in this country and machine learning was not a commodity)

>I thought government checks dont get holds???
According to who? They can put a hold on any cheque, within reasonable/regulated limits.
For the future (depending what this is), consider setting up direct deposit which is usually faster, and has no holds.
Yes they do. They keep them for 3-5 days and then you get an email saying it’s accepted.
Sometimes if you’re lucky the app will say the cheque isn’t in English and will refuse to deposit it via the app. Then you re-start the app, and it’ll work fine.
If you’re referring to government *cheques,*
holds are determined by your account on a case by case basis.
