## Lost Documents Dilemma: Replacement SSC Needed

I’m nearing my 20th birthday, and unfortunately, my parents lost both my social security card and birth certificate five years ago. Regrettably, they never took the initiative to obtain replacements for me. This has left me in a tough spot, as I now need one of these essential documents to secure a replacement Social Security Card (SSC).

## Lack of Alternative Identification Options

The situation is further complicated by the fact that I do not possess any of the alternative documents listed for obtaining a replacement SSC. My homeschooling background has meant that I lack school IDs or records, and I was never taken to healthcare providers, so medical records are also unavailable. Furthermore, my limited travel experience has left me without a passport, which would typically serve as a valid form of identification in this scenario.

## Pennsylvania Residency Requirement

Adding to the challenge is the fact that I reside in Pennsylvania, the sole state that mandates the presentation of a valid ID to acquire a replacement SSC (based on my understanding; please correct me if this information is outdated or inaccurate). This poses a significant obstacle, given my current lack of identification documents.

You can get a copy of your birth certificate by request. I have done it and it’s about $40 to get one sent to you quickly. Usually takes about a week. Get a couple copies if you can and store one in an absolutely safe place like a bank safety deposit box.

  • visitor987

Your parents can get you a dup birth certificate. Since you are having trouble getting photo ID You can get a passport with a birth certificate or possibly just an SS Number if your parent, other relative, or a longtime friend, with a photo id goes with you to a post office and fills out form DS-71 see link [https://www.visarite.com/images/passportforms/ds-71.pdf](https://www.visarite.com/images/passportforms/ds-71.pdf) Only about one in ten post offices take passport applications and only during certain hours so call ahead. While most post offices have the passport application available only a few have ds-71 so bring several copies in case you make a mistake on one. Then you can use passport to get other photo ids. The passport office dislikes this law and has stopped updating the form, so you may have go to your local Congress(wo)man office if they give you any trouble with it.

Since you are in PA, start with getting a duplicate birth certificate

  • Silly-Concern-4460

I was able to get a certified copy of my birth certificate from the County I was born in and one for my husband from the State he was born in. I think it depends on where.

  • Julianitaos

    Time to get a physical.

  • schizomixed

Let me get this correct. your parents lost all of your identification documents, never brought you to the doctors or dentist so you don’t know anything about your health for the past 20 years?

I’m sorry but your parents screwed you over. You should apply for state health insurance if you’re low or no income which i think you are because you can’t even get an official job/file taxes without any identification. Everything is free with state health insurance. I even get a free Costco card, YMCA membership and every time i go to the doctors for important visits they load my Walmart card so i can go shopping there. You can also apply for food stamps in your state IF needed.

BUT you need your social security # or some sort of identification to apply.

Everyone is saying get your birth certificate first and yes you do need that. ID & social security card after.

I’m so sorry you are stuck in this situation, but i will say it’s not going to last forever and you DO have a future ahead of you.

Edit: i just thought of this but you probably should get vaccinated if you don’t have those records so you don’t die from something easily preventable

  • jokerfriend6

It all starts with getting that birth certificate. You might need to take a parent with you with their ID to get started.

  • Big_Parsley_1635

I had all of my papers stolen after a Job interview they got my SS card, ID & BC.

I was able to get a replacement SS card by doing it online. Go online sign up and have them mail you one it’s THAT EASY.

You might later want to do a DNA analysis. Seems like your parents went a bit overboard with your identity. Unless you’re Amish.

  • Linzartart

In 12 I adopted a child from foster care. Needed to get new ss card with our family name for him. SS wouldn’t issue without ID. Even though we had court adoption papers, denied. Kids don’t get photo ID til 16. It’s needed for plane travel. At Penndot, they refused ID w/o SS card. I called senator Toomey at the time, fed senator, this DMV turdasaurus supv, refused to speak to him. Said he’s a fed senator, and has no oversight in a state office. I put Toomey on speaker, he ripped into that guy sayn DMV gets FED money therefore he does have oversight. Demanded his name, and told him his job was in jeopardy. Dude gave my son the ID right there. Don’t let them give you any BS.

  • cyvaquero

You can get your birth certificate from the records office for your state/county of birth.

You need that and a second ID to get a duplicate SSN card.

    From [https://www.ssa.gov/ssnumber/ss5doc.htm](https://www.ssa.gov/ssnumber/ss5doc.htm)

    >**Identity**

    >We can accept only certain documents as proof of identity. An acceptable document must be current (not expired) and show your name, identifying information (date of birth or age) and preferably a recent photograph. For example, as proof of identity we must see your:

    >U.S. driver’s license.

    >State-issued non-driver identification card.

    >U.S. passport.

    >If you do not have one of these specific documents or you cannot get a replacement for one of them within 10 days, we will ask to see other documents. Any documents submitted, including the following, must be current (not expired) and show your name, identifying information (date of birth or age) and preferably a recent photograph:

    >Employee identification card.

    >School identification card.

    >Health insurance card (not a Medicare card).

    >U.S. military identification card.

  • RichMachine2018

Have your parents ever been on public assistance? They would have your ssn and birth certificate on file.

  • yabadabadobadthingz

Dude, do you remember your childhood?? Any empty gaps you can’t explain, or memories you never understood?? This is crazy, but it does happen obviously. Any chance you’re not who they are telling you, you are??

  • pattyfenwick

You’re an adult and have never been to a doctor? Go to your local clinic and get a checkup. There’s your medical record.

  • jbeve10

Read previous posts. This has been answered to death

  • rsvihla

    This BLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWS!!!

  • Francie_Nolan1964

Do you know your SS number? If you know that number you really don’t need the card anymore per the SSA site.

Were you claimed on your parents’taxes? If so, your number will be there.

“Your Social Security card is not an identification document and, in many situations, you only need to know your Social Security number (you do not need to show the physical card).”

Go to Mexico and cross over

  • Zetavu

At this point I assume you are someone trying to steal someone else’s identity, your situation is too perfect. If you know your SS number that is a start, You would have to get your original birth certificate or hospital proof of birth (or were you homebirthed too?) and then go through an affidavit of identity, probably needing a lawyer.
