I am a lawyer and, specifically, a civil litigator. I am not your lawyer, this is not legal advice. Here are two scenarios:
1. You hide the evidence from your lawyer. The evidence comes up in cross-examinations. Your lawyer is unprepared. Since you’ve withheld information, the relationship is considered broken. Now, you’ve had a shitty cross and no lawyer.
2. You don’t hide the evidence. It looks bad, but the court sees you as honest and forthcoming. Now, there is a much higher chance that you need the court to believe you on other things they will.
You’re right; the evidence might never come up. If you’re truly innocent,, you must put all your cards on the table.
One point also not to ignore is if the other party finds out that evidence try to downplay, during their discovery process and then brings it up later in the trial it could potentially damage your credibility as a witness (i.e. you first say you were never at X location at Y time, but then they bring up that you used your credit card at that time and place). Basically now you will be fighting the stigma of since you misrepresented your point A, why are your points B,C,D truthful.

Not a lawyer but people who lie to their lawyers and hide stuff from them are fools. A lawyer’s advice is only as good as the information he’s given. It’s easy to provide only your side of the story, but the advice you get, while very likely coinciding with what you’d like to hear, will not be correct. If they have everything, cards on the table, then they can plan appropriately to represent you. And all the bad stuff you’re not giving… the other side will, so it will come up and your lawyer will be scrambling to deal with it.
They will have to share it and risk their license by not sharing it… but if you are forthcoming about everything then you are more believable than the one sided party.
