**The Struggles of Being a First-Year International College Student in Turin, Italy**

As a first-year international college student, I find myself living in Turin, Italy. This journey has been quite eye-opening for me, especially in terms of my expectations versus the reality of living in Europe. In my home country, Europe was often romanticized as a paradise, and while I still believe that it offers many opportunities, the challenges I have encountered have painted a more complex picture.

When I first arrived in Italy, I had high hopes for the future, but now I’m feeling increasingly worried. People keep warning me about the unaffordable housing, the highly competitive job market, and the overall overwhelming nature of life in this new country. These concerns have left me feeling anxious about what lies ahead. Will I be able to secure a job that pays the bills? Will I ever be able to afford a house or start a family? These questions have been weighing heavily on my mind, and I’m struggling to find a sense of peace amid all the uncertainty.

It often feels like the future is becoming more and more daunting, especially compared to the experiences of previous generations. The idea of achieving the same level of success and comfort that they enjoyed seems increasingly out of reach.

Seek professional help from a public mental health medical professional. ItÔÇÖs not a shame. Moving countries is stressful.

Yes. Money printing a.k.a. inflation fucked it all up.

There is a lot of stress/anxiety these days about this or the environmental/geopolitical issues, it is normal. Objectively it is still a very good time in History to be alive. There may be perks from your parents generation that you won’t have, but there will also be many you will get that they didn’t have.

Try to keep your anxiety in check, focus on the present and you will be fine.

As a first year international student itÔÇÖs going to be hard to see how amazing Italy actually is because on a student budget you just donÔÇÖt have the money to explore and do fun things. The whole southern part of the continent is absolutely amazing. We have beautiful architecture, beautiful works of art, beautiful music, we have Catholicism, we have beautiful people etc. We are not as financially rich as Americans but this is the best continent.
Of course, we can afford to start families, we can afford to buy houses but these things have always required self sacrifice.

It’s normal to be stressed when moving out when reversing college, especially moving far away and young. Seek out friends by joining clubs in college/university. Seek out free therapy from university too. Study hard and with your English and Italian skills you can hopefully get a good job after.

Finding a job is hard in Italy generally compared to western European countries. It’s no worse than where you came from and you could have a chance of finding job in other places depending on how transferable degree is and visa status after you graduate or even language (eg if you learn German or find English speaking employer many people find jobs in Germany). For the moment, focus on settling into your new surroundings, making friends, and studying. Worry about it you’ll afford a house later, much later.

I have no idea regarding how the job market is in Italy but it’s defiantly possible to still have a good life in Europe.

You don’t mention what you are studying? That really determines where and how easy it will be to find a job.

Where I live (Sweden) it is quite easy to find a job if you are educated in something like technology, IT or healthcare.

I’m a mechanical engineer and every few weeks there is some job interview offer in my LiknkedIn messages. Finding the first job was tough though, but once you get experience and connections things go smooth.

If you can make friends that work in the industry it will really help you as well.

There will always be challenges in life but it makes no sense for you to suffer them in imagination before they have even arisen, so I agree with the other that this type of self-development is important. It can be therapy, meditation, regular exercise, good sleep, healthy diet, philosophy (reading Stoicism philosophy helped me a lot).

You yourself represent the world dynamic, you are a foreigner that have gone to study in Europe. And by the sound of it you would like to live there indefinitely. World population keeps on increasing and everyone is going to the same places on the planet, US and Western Europe and some other places for digital nomads. Life is certainly becoming more expensive and just difficult by base standard. More requirements and demands in all aspects of life. You are talking about jobs but you can hear how there are competitions for kids to get into day care and kindergarten.
