Do half time, reduced hours etc. I would try and be flexible if you medically can as it seems her workplace is trying to be as well. I run some places that is a very small staff. I’m in IL and had severe HG for two pregnancies. I also worked for small non-profits during both pregnancies. Neither was required to do anything (one was big enough to hold my job). I went down to part time around week 15 of my first pregnancy (when I wasn’t getting better), and took unpaid leave from week 7-14 of my second pregnancy (and felt well enough to work after that).
I also want to validate that you’re probably stressed out, too. Being a spouse of an HG person is INCREDIBLY stressful (my husband started losing his hair during my first pregnancy! It grew back). Make sure you get support as well.
Financially, it sucked a lot. We put our loans into forbearance, cancelled cable, didn’t get smart phones until like 2014, skipped Christmas gifts, relied on friends and family for baby gear. We literally had to short-sale our house and move to a smaller apartment to survive on just my husband’s income. We’d worked so hard to get there (we both had Master’s Degrees!) and *poof,* gone. It was emotionally hard. But we made it through (this was 13 and 10 years ago that I experienced this). For my second kid, we saved everything we could between pregnancies (lived on DH’s income and saved most of mine, in that tiny apartment) so that we felt comfortable when I took 8 weeks off of work. The difference in my health during HG was night and day – I knew what would work for my second pregnancy and wasn’t stressed about trying to get in to work. I was sicker during that pregnancy (more frequent vomiting, could keep less down), but I came out of it healthier than I did the first. My teeth were intact, my thyroid was sort of working, and I was even able to breastfeed (with my first, my body was like “no thank you, I’m still trying to die, give that kid some formula). I’m emotional thinking about it now – how hard it was. But you’ll get through it. Hugs for you and your wife!
