The Positive Impact of Reducing Over-Regulation on the Economy
Introduction
For too long, excessive regulation has cast a shadow over our economy, stifling innovation and competition. Businesses have found themselves ensnared in a complex web of bureaucratic red tape that diverts attention away from their core missions—creating jobs, fostering innovation, and effectively serving their customers. The cost of navigating these regulations has proven burdensome, often weighing more heavily on small business owners who strive tirelessly to contribute to local economies.
A Call for Change
The effects of the previous administration’s policies have been particularly damaging. Hardworking Americans and small businesses have struggled under the weight of burdensome regulations, hindering their ability to thrive. It is imperative that we take strong action to prevent the return of such stifling regulatory practices.
The Regulation Reduction Act
At the forefront of this movement is my legislation, the Regulation Reduction Act. This pivotal bill introduces stringent measures aimed at curbing the unchecked growth of federal regulations. One major provision requires executive agencies to repeal at least three existing regulations for every new rule they propose. The statistics illustrate the scale of the issue: in 2022, the costs associated with regulatory compliance soared past an astounding $3 trillion. On average, U.S. companies were forced to allocate approximately $277,000 each year just to adhere to existing regulations.
This averages out to nearly $13,000 spent per employee on regulatory expenses alone—capital that might otherwise be invested in better wages, innovative projects, and operational improvements.
Recent Legislative Actions
In tandem with the Regulation Reduction Act, the House has taken significant strides to shield both businesses and consumers from expensive and unnecessary energy regulations. Recently, two pivotal resolutions which aim to roll back the overreaching mandates of the Biden administration are under consideration in the House.
H.J. Res 24: A Push Against Misguided Energy Mandates
The first significant resolution is H.J. Res 24, a bill that I authored, which seeks to counteract the Department of Energy’s faulty mandates concerning walk-in coolers and freezers. These appliances are vital in various settings including pharmacies, convenience stores, food processing plants, food banks, restaurants, and many others. The Department of Energy estimated that compliance with this regulation could cost around a billion dollars; however, many industry experts argue that the actual costs—when factoring in equipment and operational expenses—would be much higher, threatening to disrupt supply chains and push consumer prices upward at a time when inflation is already stretching American families’ budgets thin.
H.J. Res 75: Undoing Costly Compliance Requirements
The second resolution, H.J. Res 75, introduced by my colleague, Representative Craig Goldman of Texas, aims to overturn previous energy conservation regulations affecting commercial refrigeration systems. These extensive compliance demands imposed serious financial burdens on businesses of every size—from small local establishments to large-scale food suppliers—ultimately driving up operational costs and limiting consumer choices. Affordable and efficient refrigeration systems are the backbone of countless businesses across the nation.
The Role of the Federal Government
It is crucial that the federal government positions itself as a facilitator of economic growth rather than a barrier. The excessive regulations established by the previous administration not only suppressed consumer choice but also escalated costs and stifled innovative thought.
Moving Forward
Thanks to the visionary leadership of President Trump and the unwavering dedication of House Republicans, we are actively fighting to cultivate a regulatory environment that uplifts, rather than hinders, the American populace.
