### Concerns about Marriage and Disability Benefits

Greetings! My partner and I are in the process of planning our upcoming nuptials. We share a son and have been in a committed relationship for a significant period of five years. However, our primary concern lies in how this marriage may impact my disability benefits.

I have been receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) for over six years now. On the other hand, my partner has forged a successful career as a heavy diesel mechanic from a young age. His income currently supports our family comfortably, considering our collective circumstances of being on disability and having a dependent son. Fortunately, we are not burdened by a substantial amount of debt.

Our residence is in Georgia. We are uncertain if tying the knot would alter my disability benefits. The insurance options available through my partner’s job have proven to be less than ideal.

We seek guidance regarding the potential impact of marriage on my disability benefits. Would it be advisable to consult with a legal professional for clarification?

Your insights and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, like the others said, make sure you are on SSDI based on your own work credits and not DAC based on your parents work credit or SSI.

  • ask290

If you are on SSDI, it will not affect your benefits at all.

If you are correct in your acronyms, you are not on a welfare program. Marry whoever you want.

Read your letters if you want to know what to report, or call your local office, go to SSA.gov, or read a pamphlet.

Make sure you understand all rules.

If you are on Social Security Disability Insurance it will not effect your payments or Medicare. You should call SSA after you get married to report it and they can make a note of it. If you get SSI, SNAP, Medicaid, HUD or other welfare programs you need to report the change in income within ten days to your local social services department.

As others have said, your benefits would only be affected were it SSI rather than SSDI. The other things that might be affected are any state programs you may be on that count household income (foodstamps, medicaid, tanf, wic, etc.) but if between the two of you, you’ll be living comfortably, it sounds like you’ll be okay. Your benefits will stay the same šŸ™‚

Iā€™m on SSDI and before I got married, I received government assistance; food stamps, and my secondary medical coverage and my sonā€™s medical coverage. When I got married, it all ended! I lost the food help, my secondary insurance and ssdi deducts my monthly insurance premium from my ssdi payments nowā€¦ my son still has his insurance but thatā€™s because my husband is not his father.
Getting married was the worst thing I could have done because I donā€™t share money with my husband, I literally pay half of everything and Iā€™m drowning.
If you and your husband share money and have a plan, then hopefully it wonā€™t hit you hard.

Should be fine to keep your benefits. However, just keep a separate bank account. I have personally had issues with ssdi asking about income and it was my husband or people sending him money when he would buy food for work. Easy to explain and prove, but it would have been easier to just not deal with it in the first place.

If I havenā€™t been in the work force for years now. Me and my daughter s dad are divorced since 15 years now. He was never home to my question about the fact I have shared parenting and itā€™s like full custody and he picks her up every other week end . His retirement 2 years ago he was the one who had the chance to get extra money for her . Now mind u he was never home and for that being said, I think I gotten fucked he didnā€™t even raise his daughter.
