Empowering People with Disabilities in the Workplace
TULSA, Okla. ÔÇö A green country woman who helps people living with disabilities finds jobs, launched a book educating business owners on how to include disabled workers.
ItÔÇÖs called ÔÇ£The Secrets of the Hidden WorkforceÔÇØ and its message is simple: everyone has the ability to work, everyoneÔÇÖs abilities are just different.
ÔÇ£ItÔÇÖs very possible to take somebody that we prejudge, we do, to give them a chance and transform their lives,ÔÇØ said Craig Hicks, the manager at Not Your Average Joe coffee shop in Broken Arrow.
Inside the shop is where author Lisa Toth set up to sign her new book that shares inspiring stories about people with different abilities in the workforce.
ÔÇ£We do talk about the good, bad, and ugly,” said Toth. “I think the good overwhelms everything. YouÔÇÖll see that itÔÇÖs positive and productive. Hiring people with different abilities is not scary, itÔÇÖs not something you have to do for charity, itÔÇÖs something thatÔÇÖs really going to benefit you.”
You may remember Lisa from 2023. We told you she runs a staffing agency tailored to finding jobs for people living with disabilities. From that, her radio show, and now her book, sheÔÇÖs sharing her purpose teaching others to embrace everyone.
ÔÇ£I want everyday people, everyday Tulsans, to know these people are special and theyÔÇÖre valuable. DonÔÇÖt be afraid of them, donÔÇÖt lock them away. Give them a chance because theyÔÇÖre going to give your life so much more meaning,ÔÇØ said Toth.
Ben Woodson is one of several people Lisa has helped nail down a job. In fact, heÔÇÖs starting a new job at UniFirst. He says working with Lisa, heÔÇÖs learned how to manage stress.
ÔÇ£ItÔÇÖs been like a road and a direction, guiding me through the best and sometimes IÔÇÖve been through horrible times, and I say IÔÇÖll just talk to Lisa,” said Woodson. “I know she understands what IÔÇÖm going through and can help me really well.ÔÇØ
The three-part book shares her passion she hopes business owners will grasp and the successes to encourage those business owners to make the right hire.
ÔÇ£We all have different abilities. Some of them slow us down and some make us super spectacular. I try to find the super spectacular things in people and match them with employers that can use that,ÔÇØ said Toth.
The book launched this month in correlation with Developmental Disabilities Awareness month.
You can find “The Secrets of the Hidden Workforce” at Barnes & Noble and Amazon.
You can also listen to Lisa Toth’s podcast on Spotify and follow her on Instagram and Facebook.
