Yes, if youÔÇÖre a category 3 insured person (dependent of a person enrolled as category 2 – paying Shakai Hoken), then you can invest 23,000 per month in iDeco.

Edit: after finding out that youÔÇÖre a U.S. citizen, I would encourage you not to sign up for iDeco. Perhaps you could buy individual Japanese stocks in a NISA account.

DO NOT get an iDeco as a US citizen.

Is unfortunate, but most (all?) Japanese investment schemes are disadvantageous to US citizens due to PFIC rules and your ongoing commitments to the IRS even if you do not live in the US. You’d be better keeping your yen in the bank making zero interest or even just tucking cash under your tatami mats or whatever.

The most common routes that US citizens living abroad invest is either opening a US brokerage account and investing in ETFs or trying to open a Japanese brokerage account and investing in US domiciled ETFs such as Vanguard ETFs (avoiding PFICs). Or if you can convince your significant other and are confident you’ll be together until retirement to invest through/with them, although this may be difficult in your case considering your husbands perspective towards investing.

Thanks a lot! I was a bit confused on that. I’ve been reading through all the posts here on iDeco but is there a good place/book that has more info preferably in English?

As long as youÔÇÖre not a US citizen or US green card holder then youÔÇÖre all good.

Edit: that said if youÔÇÖre only part time earning <┬Ñ1.3 million employment income per year you might prefer NISA over iDeCo, because youÔÇÖre barely paying any tax so cannot maximize one of the main bonus points of iDeCo

Persuade your husband to start iDeCo as long as he is not a US citizen. Buy the guide from RetireJapan if you need to understand it better.

Then open an IBSJ account for yourself to start investing a little in your own name. Forget iDeCo and NISA.
