## Retirement Social Security Application Process and Timeline Extension

Hello! I am 69 years old and recently applied for Retirement Social Security. Originally, I had planned to wait another year before applying, but due to the current economic situation, I found it necessary to submit my application earlier. I completed the online application on March 16th, and received a letter in early April requesting additional information.

Upon contacting the Social Security office as per the letter’s instructions, I was informed that everything was in order, but they needed proof of my identity. I promptly visited the local SS office with my Driver’s License in mid-April. However, since then, I have not received any further updates on the status of my application.

My online SS account shows that step 2 out of 3 has been completed since mid-March, with a note stating that they are working to process my application as quickly as possible. Despite the estimated 2 to 4-week timeframe for most applicants, it has been almost 8 weeks since I applied and nearly 4 weeks since submitting my driver’s license.

Any insight on the expected timeframe for completion would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your assistance in this matter.

From my application to receiving my first check was four months.

    They are super slow.

  • Inside_Archer_5647

Hey listen, mine took 3 months. And I was working there at the time!

  • Dangerous-View2524

Applied late October approval early January for me

  • Dipsy_doodle1998

I applied in August for November retirement. First payment received in December. I did have to go down there after initial on line application, had to do with my adoption papers, but that was resolved quickly.

Some I know said it took five months to get the first regular check after applying online without any complications. It was proceeded by a one time catchup check three months in without the medicare deducted. Other people in this reddit report faster times. 9,000 boomers are reaching full retirement age every day now, perhaps slowing the system.

Note, there is a built in delay of up to two months. For example, your January check is scheduled the last Wednesday of February if you were born late in the month. So you dont see the annual updates like COLA until then.

It usually takes months for it to all get settled – I started in July for a November payment. I am sorry you could not wait till 70 cuz you are so close to full realizing that deferment

  • Turbulent-Stable-541

Did my application online March 29 receiving my first payment May 8.

  • hoopjohn1

I applied in November and received my first check in February. I did everything online, never having to visit a SS office. Your situation is typical.

  • NoTwo1269

I am thinking this is why SSA tells people to apply 4 months in advance to when you want to start receiving your first check. It must take time to process everything and/ be able to let you collect things they may need.

  • DesignerSituation626

My husband and i got approved in 48 hours … sounds like you have a problem

  • pattyfenwick

    What month did you elect?

  • movdqa

I went to the local office in mid-March and said that I wanted to retire for May. They took my information and what I wanted to do and scheduled a phone appointment for March 29. They did the phone interview and approved Social Security on April 1, 2024 which I thought was incredible turnaround time.

It took a few weeks to get enrolled in Medicare for Parts C and D but that started yesterday.

My local office was almost empty when I went in and I only waited a minute to see someone and there were about 5 people in the waiting room when I left. So it may be that the processing in my area is a lot less busy than yours.

Could you go back to your local office to ask for a status?

The phone appointment for me is where they called me – I didn’t call them. So maybe the procedures are different from state to state.

  • Particular_Map9772

I would call again . A RIB claim only takes about 10 minutes!!

  • sheba716

I had to go to my local SS office to get my Medicare Part B because they needed the form from my employer to prove I had creditable coverage before I retired. They took care of it at the office and I got my Medicare Part B. You may have to go back to your local office to get your SS straightened out. Make sure before you leave your SS payments are approved, you know how much you will be getting every month and what time of the month you will get your payments.
