## Planning for Aged Care Expenses in the Future

My wife and I are 40/43 in age, and the topic of aged care expenses has been on my mind lately. I have been pondering how people similar to our age plan and prepare for such costs.

A preliminary analysis of our current expenses indicates that each of us might require at least $50,000 per year, excluding the potential accommodation payment (RAD/DAP), which could amount to an additional $50,000 or more. Therefore, the total annual expense could reach up to $200,000 or possibly even $300,000 by the time we reach our 80s.

Considering our financial situation, I am skeptical about qualifying for any government rebates to help with these expenses. Moreover, as immigrants without any family nearby and having chosen not to have children, we lack the traditional support system that many rely on in older age.

It is worth noting that Voluntarily Assisted Dying (VAD) legislation may not be applicable to us, as it requires a sound mind and is typically only an option for individuals with a terminal illness expected to pass within a short timeframe.

Given these factors, I am contemplating whether setting aside at least $1 million or more specifically for aged care expenses would be a prudent decision for our future financial security.

The easy way is to sell your house for the RAD and super or pension will normally cover daily fees, as they are means tested.

Most people do not plan to cover aged car. We just expect to stay at home and muddle through.

Government care plans make this easier

There is a maximum life time means tested fee. Along with a yearly max.

Sell home or other asset for a room.

Pay daily fee out of pension income (abp). Generally the daily cost takes over you pre care living expenses

People don’t generally live in aged care for very long. The aim is for ppl to live at home with an aged care package for as long as possible and only move into residential care when it is absolutely unavoidable. My grandmother lived about 4 months, my aunt and uncle 10 weeks and 5 weeks respectively. My mother in law was longer, but she was DVA so it wasn’t costing her anything (beyond the 80% of the pension everyone pays). It will also change about 5 or more times before you need it, so I wouldn’t bother trying to plan for it. Try to stay healthy for as long as possible instead.

I will kill myself before going into aged care. Waste of money and life.

I’m guessing the aged care payment system will have changed drastically by the time you need it. In 40 years time, there won’t be enough workers for aged care, the tax payer to retired people ratio will have changed, too many old people who never owned their home so don’t have a big asset to sell, and not enough savings or super.
