While my C&P examiner did not note suicidal ideation, I am considering pursuing a Higher-Level Review (HLR) to ensure all aspects of my condition are accurately represented. Additionally, I have learned that I can claim alcohol abuse as a secondary condition to my PTSD, as indicated by my AA-Alcohol Abuse (Active) diagnosis in my VA Health Summary.

Any substance abuse gets rolled into your mental health rating but if you develop health issues because of alcohol abuse it would be possible to get those secondary linked to your ptsd/alcohol abuse down the road so might be a good idea.
FYI if you file claim for alcohol use disorder after already being sc for mental health you’ll get a C&P exam. This could lead to an increase, reduction, or continued at 50%. If you get an increase the effective date goes back to the date of C&P exam. I would strongly suggest going over criteria for 70% to see if your symptoms support that jump before filing a claim for alcohol. Good luck and I hope you get the help you need for your drinking so you can be the best YOU! That’s the most important thing. Inpatient treatment helped me get some clarity and I work a program today. ✌🏼
It falls under your mental health rating.
Far more important is your health. I too had abused alcohol for decades. Began in / after service. I’m almost three years sober and I can’t even describe the physical, mental, job, and relational health improvements it gave me by getting sober. It really will kill you early and not in a pretty way. I hope you find the decision to kick it to the curb. For your gain! I don’t mean it from a moral or righteous position.
Alcohol falls under mental health. They won’t pyramid the two. You can get a ptsd with alcohol abuse. And symptoms from the cfr 38 apply to both. I went from 50-70. I wish you luck. Not a demon I wish on anyone

Ok, wait. 3 things –
1. The VA switched you to medical weed? What? I’ve heard of some of the limited trials for psilocybin and weed and MDMA and whatnot but nothing outside of very limited trials.
2. We used to kill about a bottle of patron per person per night…by any civilian standard we were raging alcoholics. I’d say at least 25-50% of PT formations had people puking / reeking of alcohol from the night before, if they weren’t still drunk from stopping just before PT.
3. Additional “trick” I was taught very early on was start slamming a drink as soon as you got off work, because it was the only way you had an excuse to not come back if your chain of command tried to recall people for random bullshit.

Simple answer, yes. The only benefit is if you want to claim something secondary to it down the road, like liver issues for example. Aside from that, the juice isn’t really worth the squeeze since they’ll tuck it under ptsd.

Yes I was 11 Bravo combat deployed to Iraq got my initial rating at 50%…low balled myself by not giving complete and honest break down to examiner how my daily life is affected…was assigned a VA mental health professionals who I absolutely was apprhensive about even up to a few months of therapy..but if they are on point which mine were they have a way of gradually getting you to at least somewhat reveal to them what it is that you are feeling and going through and what your world looks like to you…I can honestly say it is life saving…the one thing I had to grasp on to was let go of some of the hoo-ahh and bravado and be just a little receptive to the fact that we are somewhat broken and holding back only actually hurts us..with the rating yes of course but mostly with our maybe not so much of a “cure” but a if we stick together as God (Jesus) by our side we can make it and everything can be ok….it’s a fight each and every day for sure but one we can be on this side of drop zone and drive on…good luck brother and literally “folow me”…do not give in…we, you, owe to all who gave their all…
Alcohol abuse isn’t an actual rating.

Addiction goes hand and hand with a lot of typical symptoms for combat vets. I wouldn’t claim alcoholism to be my defying disorder. I would use it to support a deeper disorder like PTSD or Major depressive disorder. When I got back from Iraq my first deployment we did our post deployment questionnaires for the Docs. One question asked if friends or family had criticized our alcohol consumption since returning and I said yes. My chain of command f***** me up for that so I never sought out help for my drinking ever again after that. Believe me when I say that I made it a point to highlight that time in my life during my C&P exam. I expressed that I fell into a depression and used alcohol as my crutch the rest of my career in the Corps always afraid to seek help.

My VA psychiatrist has me down for partial alcohol use disorder. I have MDD with anxiety should I put in for another evaluation?

If your mental health/alcohol use gets worse, you’re sc for it already; it could only increase (or decrease) the existing PTSD rating. They will want specific proof that it has, of course, got worse. Divorces, DWI’s, employment termination letters, and bankruptcies, along with documented health issues, are hard proof. Good luck with your claim and your health.

I just wanted to add a note here because I meet with a lot of Veterans at inpatient treatment facilities that haven’t heard of this.
If you’re rated for substance use disorder and are checked into an inpatient program (over 21 days), you should absolutely file with the VA for convalescence if you aren’t rated at 100%. The VA can pay you at the 100% rate for being hospitalized for a service connected disability.
The same is also true for inpatient mental health stays (again, over 21 days.)

Alcohol abuse is a symptom of ptsd. It all fits under 1 umbrella. If you think it’s warranted, then you should file for an increase.
Do you have liver damage or bowel issues related to the alcohol abuse? Might be able to claim those as secondary. Over consumption of alcohol can lead to or flare psoriasis as well.
I did. I was in Mosul in 2009 and been AA meetings after my deployment. I got rated 70% permanent for Alcohol Induced PTSD.

Where were you at in Iraq in 2009? I was up at Marez, Tal-Far, and that shit. Were you in the marines? There were so many marines in northwest Iraq at that time. I feel so out of place here. I see an Iraq Vet pop up now and again and it makes me feel better. I feel so often like I don’t fit in around here.
I get 10% for alcoholism.
Heavy drinking until late 2011 – are you still abusing alcohol now? Does the alcohol abuse have to be current for the rating?

I showed up to my c&p with two black eyes and literally just bonded out the week prior from jail. Whatttt a doozyyy of a week that was. Anywho, I showed up to that appointment for alcohol abuse and my disability increased from 50-70%
A friend of mine was in rehab while in active duty and was too awarded a higher disability rating.

I would worry about getting help for your drinking and not trying to get money from the VA. This is my blunt opinion.
Having it secondary to your PTSD is likely to result in a higher rating and it’s the same with drug use disorder. Be honest with your examiners about your use and how it affects your condition.
It’s alcohol substance use disorder or Alcohol SUD.
I got 30% for AA 30% for tobacco use separately from MH which is 100% itself.
