Summer on Martha’s Vineyard: A Season of Memories

“I could never in a hundred summers get tired of this.” –Susan Branch

It’s that time again – the summer of 2024 has arrived! What memories will we create this year, to cherish forevermore? The Martha’s Vineyard Museum invites you to make time for a visit, or even multiple visits, to your community museum. There are endless opportunities awaiting.

For example, entertain your kids with our interactive exhibits like the Clifford exhibit with its indoor slide, or “Hands on History” which offers fun and educational activities. Don’t forget about the outdoor scavenger hunts for adventurous souls. And let’s not overlook the stunning views, the exploration, and the sheer delight that awaits you! Summer on Martha’s Vineyard is full of trips to beaches, ice cream shops, restaurants, and various outdoor activities. A visit to the Martha’s Vineyard Museum offers all of these experiences and more. It’s not just a traditional museum – it’s a vibrant, dynamic place to unwind, learn, and experience the beauty of the island.

I recently spoke with MVM research librarian Bow Van Riper and chief curator Bonnie Stacy about the energy of summer building up. Bow shared insights on how the summer season has changed over time. From a short 10-week tourist season after the Civil War to the creation of a fall shoulder season with events like the Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby, the island’s summers have evolved. The museum even showcases artifacts like early bathing dresses to give visitors a glimpse into the island’s history.

Join us tonight at 5:30 pm for the opening of “Eisenstaedt’s Martha’s Vineyard” exhibition, running until August 25. This exhibition tells the story of renowned photojournalist Eisenstaedt’s love for Martha’s Vineyard over 50 years through his photographs and personal anecdotes. Another must-see exhibition is “Sailing to Freedom: The Maritime Dimensions of the Underground Railroad” in the Grain Family Gallery, open until Sept. 22. Dr. Tim Walker’s engaging talk on the exhibition sheds light on this important part of history.

Don’t miss out on our upcoming speaker series and special events at the museum. From “Tales of Edgartown” to discussions on small businesses in a seasonal economy, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Make this summer on Martha’s Vineyard truly unforgettable!

Visit mvmuseum.org for more details on exhibitions and events. The museum is open year-round, Tuesday through Sunday, with extended summer hours. Members enjoy free admission, while nonmembers can visit for $18 for adults, $15 for seniors, $5 for children 7 to 17, and free for children 6 and under. Special rates are available for island residents.
