Survivor benefits have the same earnings limit as retirement so If youÔÇÖre working full time you may not be due anything yet. But you can draw survivors and let your own retirement grow to age 70
Keep in mind that the rules for benefits while working during early retirement are a little different in the year of your your FRA.
Most people know that the SSA takes back $1 for every $2 you earn over $21240. That is what you are referring to when you say “I’ll be taxed on it”. Right? That’s actually not a tax. Its a reduction. The taxation is a different matter. But you probably should plan on 85% of your benefit being counted a taxable income.
The year you reach FRA, they only take back $1 for every $3 you earn over $56520. So depending on which month you reach FRA, you could claim in January that year and not suffer and clawback.
So…claim your survivor benefit as soon as you won’t have any of it taken back, and wait until 70 to claim your own. My mom went through this too as a widow before 60.
I have made more then my husband. And I knew there would be some take back as well as it being taxed. Just trying to figure out if/when it would be a financial advantage. As to Medicare going up I think the threshold is close to 90k+ before they increase Medicare. Wish it were easier to figure out!
If you are on Medicare your Medicare premium might increase substantially.
Depends on your income or your address.
My 93 year old mom and 88 yr-old uncle were hit with $500 a month or more reduction in SS because Medicare premium increased.
