Through the Rent Bank, low to moderate income renters can access assistance to pay rent or utilities due to unforeseen financial emergencies, like a vehicle repair or a child needing new glasses.”

As participants take to the two- or five-kilometre routes, they will literally and figuratively walk in the shoes of those who face the chill of potential homelessness every day. This unique experience not only raises crucial funds but fosters empathy and understanding within the community.

“When they step outside into the winter chill, they are reminded of the daily challenges many individuals and families face,” Payson added. “By joining this event, participants are playing a vital role in supporting the Rent Bank and ensuring that no one has to face the cold alone.”

To incentivize participation, anyone who raises over $150 (or $75 for youth) will be awarded the iconic CNOY toque, allowing walkers to sport a badge of honor for their commitment to the cause. The walk will commence and conclude at Civic Memorial Park, providing participants not only a spirited outing but also the satisfaction of knowing they are contributing to a meaningful effort.

Vernon’s 2024 CNOY drew 200 participants and successfully generated over $34,000 for the North Okanagan Rent Bank. This initiative assists those in various municipalities including Grindrod, Enderby, Spallumcheen, Armstrong, Vernon, Coldstream, Lumby, and Cherryville. As inflation continues to affect many, which has left numerous residents juggling multiple jobs merely to meet essential expenses, the importance of this fund cannot be overstated.
