## Situation Overview:
While taking the tram in Gothenburg on Saturday, my girlfriend was fined 1800 SEK by a conductor from Västtrafik for an allegedly invalid ticket. She holds a monthly ticket (digital in the transport operator app) for her daily work commute, which is discounted by a university card (mecenat card) obtained from extra courses. The conductor claimed the university card did not have the necessary green checkmark for the discount, despite being valid until March/April 2024.
## AI Legalese Decoder Assistance:
The AI Legalese Decoder can analyze the legality of the fine based on the ticket details and provide insights on contesting it. It can also offer guidance on potential behavior strategies for similar situations in the future.
## Requested Information:
1. Is the fine justified based on the provided details, and what additional information is required for a judgment?
2. What steps can be taken to dispute the fine with Västtrafik?
3. Are there any recommended behaviors for handling similar scenarios effectively, aside from being polite and cooperative?
## Additional Context:
During the incident, the conductors checked tickets upon entry, leading to a discussion regarding the validity of the ticket. While the discussion ensued, action was needed to prevent missing their intended stop. Notably, my girlfriend is a non-EU citizen who has resided in Sweden for four years, fluent in Swedish with an accent, while I am an EU citizen with limited Swedish proficiency. The conversation between the conductor and my girlfriend took place in Swedish, requiring clarification post-incident. An attached screenshot of her student card provides visual context for evaluation.

It sounds like they are right and your GF might be unintentionally at fault. But you can visit the Västtrafik Office and talk to their customer service there. Sometimes if you get a penalty fee but you are in the right, you can get it corrected there and pay some kind of minor admin fee only. You have to google where the office is nowadays. It used to be one at Brunnsparken but I don’t know if it’s still there.
Good luck.
You said she’s missing the checkmark (needed to be eligible for the student cards in most parts of Sweden, explained on their websites). Therefore it’s not valid and she’s at fault. Pay and make sure you have valid tickets next time.

Being a student does not give you student discounts on public transport in Sweden. It is having the student card WITH the checkmark for public transport. Usually you get this by studying a minimum of 50% over 10 weeks: [info](https://support.studentkortet.se/hc/sv/articles/202885431-Hur-fungerar-studentresesymbolen-). If she were lackning the symbol, unless there was some error from the course registration, I doubt that you have a chance of contesting the fine as it seems she was in the wrong. As an example I have asked my local public transport company when I had international (student) friends visiting and they were very clear that only with the checkmark are you given a discount and just being a student gives you nothing.
You are also lucky not to be fined yourself! You need to have a valid ticket before getting on the tram or bus and I see people get into trouble over this reguarly.
Even though she did not have the checkmark (you have to update the card at the start of every semester to keep it there, and students often forget to do so), if you appeal the fine and argue that she didn’t get a chance to update her app to show the checkmark (or something similar), you can generally get it reduced to a few hundred SEK instead.
Edit: You appeal the fine to Västtrafik (you can do it through the website), and make sure to do this within ten days from when you got the fine.
Technically, she is at fault. However it is obviously not intentional and she thought she was doing right.
Talk to their customer service and explain the situation. Sometimes they can give you some leaway when it’s an honest mistake and remove the fine or reduce it to some admin fees.
You don’t need a checkmark you need a specific symbol called “studentresesymbolen” on the mecenat card.
First of all, I don’t think her looks had anything to do with it. I’m a very Swedish-looking, well, Swedish university student, and whenever there’s a control and they see I travel on discount they check my discount eligibility. Had trouble with the app once got fined since I couldn’t provide proof of me using the discount correctly and had to email them proof everything was in order (after which they withdrew it).
Looking at the photo you included, she’s indeed missing the Västtrafik/SL logo that should be there if you’re allowed to use the student discount with them. She’s probably not taking enough courses/points to be able to use the discount right now, so she is in fault, though not knowingly.
Since this seems to be an honest mistake I’d try emailing them about it, but in all likelihood you’ll have to pay the fine. I hope it won’t be too difficult on your wallets; it’s always frustrating getting punished for a miss like this and 1800kr can be a lot, especially this time of year 🙁
You don’t need a green check mark. You need Studentresesymbolen ([this](https://www.vasttrafik.se/biljetter/mer-om-biljetter/studentrabatt/)) or the SJ symbol ([this](https://mecenat.com/se/sj)) for national travel. The Mecenat app also has a pulsing orange indicator in the lower right corner of the card to show that it isn’t just a screenshot. You can’t use a student union card, it has to be the Mecenat card.
The ticket checkers in Gothenburg don’t always know what an up to date Mecenat card looks like. I was almost fined because Mecenat moved the SJ symbol slightly to the left and removed the SL logo (that is needed to get a student discount in Stockholm, and only in Stockholm) from the card.
If they did try to fine her she does not have to give them any identifying information. If so they could hold her until police arrives to do an ID check, and then they’d have to justify why they need to identify her despite having a valid ticket and student ID.
They have no right to take your social security number. They can civil arrest you until police arrives but because she maybe didn’t know much about how it works it can count as lack of knowledge and if that’s the case they can’t fine someone only the ticket price which should be pretty cheap compared to the fine.
Pretty sure it’s up to date:

This is the most Swedish thing ever. Rather than educate her and tell her what she needs to do, slap her with a draconian fine. Comply comply comply and be educated in your compliance.
Your description makes it clear that the fine is incorrect, and she should purchase adult tickets in future.

The text “läs mer” means read more. You stated your girlfriend is fluent Swedish. Well, that page clearly explains that she is not able to travel with discounted tickets…
Everyone. Be extra careful while using the public transportation in Gothenburg that you have a valid ticket. I heard on the radio today that Västtrafik are going to start sending out civilian dressed inspectors, not only the white caps are looking now. 1800 sek is a lot to lose for something trivial as a ticket and it’s extra sad to lose that around Christmas too.
Is the fine 1800kr now? That is ridiculous
Could you let me know if you got the letter with the payment request? I faced a similar kind of problem today!!!
