Heading: Concerns about Work Hours and Schedule in New Job Contract

I’m starting a new job on Monday, and as I carefully reviewed the contract, I came across a section that has raised some questions for me. Although I plan to discuss the details with my manager, I am still curious about what this entails for me in practical terms. Here, the AI Legalese Decoder can provide valuable insights and assist me in understanding the situation more comprehensively.

Understanding the Implications of a 37.5-Hour Workweek

My interpretation is that, based on a standard 37.5-hour workweek, I am expected to work for 7.5 hours each day. By assuming the typical 9-5 schedule with a 30-minute break, it suggests that the company anticipates my presence during these hours. However, I am now pondering the possibility of an alternative arrangement due to the office’s extended open hours, which are from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Exploring Alternate Work Schedule Possibilities

Hypothetically, considering the office’s schedule, would it be feasible for me to arrive at 9:30 a.m., finish at 5:30 p.m., and take a 30-minute break? This would comply with the overall 37.5-hour weekly requirement while allowing me to adjust my start time slightly. Nonetheless, I understand that this matter requires clarification, and I plan to address it directly with my manager on Monday.

7.5 hours of work, 1 hour lunch break

  • icome3rd

Yeah most places give you an hour for lunch unless you negotiate. Given the business hours, depending on your role, you may have to take an hour.

  • henkbas

My office hours are from 7am to 5pm and in that period I am to work 7.25 hours. Maybe that’s what they mean?

  • Fudgeygooeygoodness

The business hours donÔÇÖt mean your hours. Some businesses are 24/7. IÔÇÖd just ask what the usual start and finish times are as well as lunch breaks.

  • dhfhsjsnchdhd

I have the same thing, fair work says the Max is supposed to be 38 hours a week.

My contract is 830 to 5 with half hour lunch which is 40 hours.

I’ve never brought it up but I don’t feel bad if I take an extra long lunch or turn up late.

Break will be an hour, no flexibility will be there due to needing coverage for all hours

  • stevedaher

Be mindful it might say reasonable overtime as required unless you are paid hourly in which case they would pay you for any additional hours.

Also just a word of advice from someone perhaps a little older, donÔÇÖt focus on how you can do less time at the office and try to do the best job you can. I wouldnÔÇÖt think you would need to even discuss with anyone, as you will likely work it out through work mates what the status quo is.

My office hours are 8-5, but that doesnÔÇÖt mean all staff are rostered on from 8-5, some people do full days, some do part, some 8-4 others 9-5 etc. however we canÔÇÖt be rostered on outside of those hours

  • piratesahoy

    > couldn’t I theoretically come in at 9.30, finish at 5.30 with a 30 minute break?

Many places want you in the office during their usual business hours (though not all)
