Reflecting on Nearly Two Decades at the CBI: A Personal Farewell
Moving On After 19 Years
As my remarkable journey as the Wales Director for the CBI draws to a close, it is time for me to embrace new opportunities. In this, my final regular column for Business News Wales, I want to take a moment to reflect on the experiences and lessons I have gathered throughout my nearly two-decade tenure at the CBI.
A Rollercoaster Ride for Business
The last 19 years can be aptly described as a rollercoaster ride, especially for the business community in Wales and the UK at large. Over this period, we have navigated through a tumultuous landscape, facing significant economic and social challenges that have reshaped our industries and communities.
Three pivotal events have particularly affected businesses and society: the devastating financial crash of 2008, the existential upheaval brought about by Brexit, and, most tragically, the global Covid-19 pandemic. This pandemic has not only resulted in immense hardship for businesses but has also wrought unbearable sorrow upon many communities.
The CBI has consistently stood by businesses during these challenging times, providing vital support through key initiatives such as the furlough scheme and various other policy efforts designed to bolster the economy.
Collaboration with Government
Another notable aspect of my role has been the opportunity to work closely with both the devolved and UK governments on improving Welsh business priorities. My tenure has unfolded across the leadership of eight prime ministers and five first ministers. Throughout my interactions with numerous politicians, it has been heartening to observe that, despite their varied styles, most genuinely prioritized the best interests of Wales. Some leaders proved to be more effective than others, yet each brought their unique perspective to the table.
The Dark Side of Politics
Unfortunately, one of the troubling trends I have witnessed during my time is the alarming increase in abuse directed at elected officials, particularly women, via social media. It raises serious concerns about the political landscape and may deter future leaders from entering public service. The unacceptable targeting of individuals for harassment is deeply disheartening, and I find it difficult to advocate for anyone—especially family members—to consider a political career in this toxic climate. This unsettling trend extends beyond Wales, marking a disturbing global phenomenon that requires urgent attention.
Gratitude for Team Support
Reflecting on my experiences at the CBI, I have had the privilege of working alongside incredibly talented individuals. While it would be impossible—and unfair—to highlight just one person, I have consistently found myself surrounded by exceptional colleagues whose dedication is unparalleled. Their unwavering commitment to addressing the trials confronting businesses is a testament to the strength of the CBI.
Furthermore, I have engaged with a multitude of stakeholders whose honesty and integrity inspire me daily. We are fortunate to work alongside a dedicated group of public sector officials and government affairs professionals whose passion for Wales is evident in everything they do.
Farewell Gatherings
One of the highlights of my departure was the gathering of representatives from the Welsh business community at my farewell event, hosted at ‘The Classroom/Y Dosbarth’ chef training restaurant at Cardiff and Vale College. Witnessing the enthusiasm and commitment of the owners, management, and staff of various businesses affirmed the immense effort that goes into ensuring their success and survival every single day.
The Road Ahead
As I transition from my role at CBI Wales, I will continue to contribute to the private sector as a non-executive with Thomas Carroll. Moreover, I remain committed to supporting remarkable organizations like Vibe Youth and Gower College in Swansea. My heartfelt thanks go out to everyone I have had the pleasure of working with, especially my dedicated CBI Wales team, for their invaluable support, guidance, and camaraderie throughout these past 19 years.
