‘Your intelligence service is not up to par’: A revealing stroll through Moscow on war anniversary
By Diana Magnay, Moscow correspondent
Two years have passed since Russia invaded Ukraine, and in Moscow’s Victory Park, the prevailing sentiment among those we interviewed was that their country was on the right track.
“We’re doing the right thing, victory will be ours,” says a woman enjoying a midday walk with her family. The concept of victory, however, can vary greatly depending on who you ask.
“Victory means the total defeat of the enemy,” proclaims her son, Temikhan. “The main enemy being the Nazis who are based there.”
“The Ukrainians are our fraternal people,” his mother adds. “They are not to blame.” Temikhan, who is only 15, forms his opinions based on a diverse range of sources including YouTube videos, Russian and Ukrainian media, and even Sky News. “The individuals causing chaos there are monsters, not even human,” he asserts.
When asked about Alexei Navalny, Temikhan appreciates his efforts in combating corruption but expresses uncertainty about other aspects. “Critiquing his homeland throughout his life, the country that raised him, is very bad,” he remarks.
During our walk, we encounter someone who has been involved in the war.
“What channel? What state? Hurry up!” he demands as I approach. I provide him with the information.
“As a participant in the special military operation, do not disturb us, I advise against it,” he warns me sternly. “Your island is small, and your intelligence service is not up to par.”
A brief drive down Kutuzovsky Prospect, towards the Kremlin, leads us to Ukrainsky Boulevard.
There stands a statue of Lesya Ukrainka, a renowned 19th-century Ukrainian writer. Muscovites have been known to lay flowers at the site following major strikes on Ukrainian civilian infrastructure during the war.
Recently, there have been incidents of detentions, with authorities vigilant during crucial moments but generally allowing the flowers to remain until nightfall.
On this particular anniversary, however, the flowers were promptly removed after being placed. Social media clips captured individuals of a certain group threatening those paying their respects.
A man who unfurled a “no war” banner was apprehended by police. Depending on his history of offenses, he may receive a warning or face escalating legal consequences.
Later in the evening, as I proceed down Kutuzovsky Prospect, I gaze up at the multistory office building that marks the beginning of the renowned Novy Arbat and houses a section of the city administration.
For as long as I can remember – in the seemingly never-ending context of this war – a prominent “Z” has illuminated the building’s facade at night, a greeting to “Z-land” for Vladimir Putin during his late-night commute to the Kremlin.
For some residents of the capital, it serves as a symbol of pride, while for others, it represents profound shame.
