Why are you wasting your time answering scammers and claiming to be law enforcement isn’t really a good idea? I don’t know if you could get in trouble but please be careful

  • Zealousideal_Put_489

My understanding is it’s not legal to do but it’s also something that someone would have to prove, more or less.. If you said “I’m officer ____ and I’m citing you with _____” or dressed in uniform, there’s reasonable expectation for an individual to assume you are truly a police officer. Over the phone I don’t know if that applies. NAL, and I will look into it. Also not to mention most of the scammers aren’t even based in the US so the laws wouldn’t even relate.

Side story: when I signed up for phone service one time I put Dr. in front of my name. Had it there for 10 years. I would answer as Dr (my last name) and it was always funny. As long as I didn’t schedule appoints or something I figured I was safe. Don’t say you will arrest them or try to meet them anywhere. Play it vague. I’m also not a doctor or a lawyer.

  • Johnthedoer

    I’m with the FDI.

  • rokar83

I like “City morgue. You stab em, we slab em.” Usually works. Or answering in a foreign language too.

I kept one on there line for 30 seconds once by saying Holá. And I don’t speak English.

  • WinginVegas

Former Police Officer – Feel free to say “Special Agent,” it has no legal connotation since you could be a special agent for anything (Or if you are Anthony DeNozzo, you can be a Very Special Agent).

You could also answer as Sheriff’s Office, City Morgue, County Jail since none of that implies that YOU are law enforcement. They all have civilians answering the phone most of the time. Hell, be the White House Switchboard or the Russian Embassy.

  • Holdem88

You Never announced what type of organization. You could be Special Agent of grocery shopping ?

  • Sufficient-Green-763

In my state, claiming to be a cop isn’t a crime unless you use a badge or a uniform or take some act as the officer. Merely saying you are on the phone, but not ordering the person to do anything, is technically in the clear.

It’s a real bad idea though, and I wouldn’t expect a court to be super eager to side with you if it ever got reported

  • briefadventure411

Most scammers operate outside of the country so you have zero jurisdiction over them.

  • Hypnowolfproductions

First off if they are in another country I don’t see the pressing charges. But there are better ways that I use to mess with them

Now beware if it’s a real officer calling you for some reason and you say your are an officer. It will be trouble. I have told a scammer when asking my address it’s a prison. I was convicted of castrating a scammer and extradited home.

  • affablemisanthropist

Michael Scott got 5 years for impersonating an agent in Threat Level Midnight. As part of his restitution, he put on scared straight skits as his prison persona, Prison Mike, and helped men and women in crisis confront the horrifying realities they would face in prison if they didn’t change their ways.

  • Tim_the_geek

Using terms like officer or agent is not illegal.. unless you add law enforcement to the description. Just dont use words like sheriff. I am an officer of Bullshit, as certified by my own institute. I am also referred to as Agent Tim the Geek, as I also hold the title of agent / special agent, which is also appointed to me due to my position at my own institute. Sometimes I refer to myself as your honor also, because of the rank I have sustained within my own institute.
