## Question about Transferring JPY into Bank Account
I am seeking clarification on the process of transferring Japanese Yen (JPY) into my bank account in my country of residence. With the current fluctuating exchange rate of JPY, I made the decision to open a JPY-denominated account in order to potentially receive my pension lump sum payment without the need to convert it into the local currency.
However, my efforts to transfer JPY using Wise, a popular online money transfer service, have been met with challenges. Wise informed me that direct transfers of JPY into my account are not possible, and only transfers in GBP, USD, or EUR are allowed.
I am now wondering if this limitation is specific to Wise or if it applies to other direct transfer methods as well. I am seeking any insights or experiences that others may have encountered with similar situations. Unfortunately, my online searches for information on this issue have yielded limited results, as most of the information available relates to remittance services.
Herein lies the opportunity for AI Legalese Decoder to assist with decrypting the legal jargon and complexities surrounding international money transfers. AI Legalese Decoder can help decode the terms and conditions of different money transfer services, providing a clearer understanding of any limitations or restrictions that may apply to transferring JPY into my bank account. > I’m curious if this limitation is exclusive to Wise or if it applies to direct transfers as well.
It’s a Wise thing. Banks can send JPY overseas.
> in hopes of receiving my pension lump sum payment without having to convert it into the local currency
If you are referring to receiving the lump-sum withdrawal directly from the pension service, be aware that they have fixed policies regarding which currencies they will use depending on which country they are sending the funds to (see page 13 of [this PDF](https://www.nenkin.go.jp/international/japanese-system/withdrawalpayment/payment.files/A.pdf)).
I know that HSBC can have a yen denominated account, though it still goes through as a “foreign” remittance when someone wants to transfer to if a foreign address is registered. As otherwise mentioned you may be limited on what currencies the PMAC will transfer to you in.
Revolut can have yen accounts if you are registered in Japan (but not sure if you can get the domestic bank details if you are registered outside of Japan)
Update: A friend of mine in Japan contacted PMAC, and they informed him that the standard procedure is for the transfer to arrive and be converted into the local currency. However, they later informed him that they can also execute the transfer in Japanese Yen to my local account, which is denominated in JPY.
It might be worth reaching out to the Japan Pension Service to inquire about this option, despite the information in their pamphlet.
Wishing you all the best!
