## Legal Troubles and the Challenges Ahead

Well, happy new year, I guess. As I embark on this daunting legal journey, I find myself facing unexpected challenges and uncertainties. It all started when the police knocked on my door as I was getting ready for work. The charges against me are related to non-contact offenses, and despite acknowledging the wrongfulness of my actions, I found myself fired from my job. With no access to EI benefits and restrictions on computer usage due to bail conditions, I am left scrambling to find employment that accommodates these limitations, even if it means settling for minimum wage.

## Support Systems Tested and Plans for the Future

While my parents have been largely supportive, I can’t help but worry about the financial strain my situation is putting on them. This has led me to move back home, only to realize that most of my friends have distanced themselves from me, understandably so. Engaging with legal counsel revealed exorbitant costs and the grim reality of facing prison time without much of a defense.

The prospect of affording counselling adds to my financial woes, making it challenging to seek the emotional support I need during this tumultuous period. My once hopeful five-year plan now involves serving time, facing financial struggles, and rebuilding my life from scratch as a middle-aged man living under constant supervision, akin to starting anew as a child.

A lot of us have a similar story, I’m 41 and also need to try a career change into one of the felon-friendly fields. It will take some time but I feel like I can get my life back on track in a year or two.

I was a call center manager before my charges etc. I now change oil and I make more than twice minimum wage. I’m in Texas so I’m sure things are different, but please know there is hope. You will need to make many sacrifices, but your life is by no means over. It will be different, but not over. Just wanted to put that out there. Good luck, and please take treatment seriously, it can be life changing

Fellow Canadian here. I’ve been where you are. Take each day as it comes – one foot in front of the other.

Doing time is definately an experience. Not sure what your province offers, but sounds like you’ll most likely be in provincial custody as opposed to federal – depending on your charges of course. When I went thru the system in MB, we had our own separate building/unit dorm style.

As for free support/counselling look into CoSA. Apparently our Canadian version is completely diff from the US version – for the better.

    Keep your head up, bud

I feel for you. I really do.

I’m pretty much in much the same position as you, arrested back in August. If you want to chat send me a PM I’m also from Canada currently out on super restrictive bail (no computer, etc), lost my job, can’t work, etc.

  • _AnonEMouse_

Welcome, and I am sorry you are here.

    The waiting can be tough.

If you can find a psychiatrist (or GP) who does talk therapy, that’s an OHIP (or other province’s healthcare)-insurable route for counselling.

Yet another Canadian here offering what little I can – just a kind and supportive word. I’m sorry you’re in this position, and I know from painful firsthand experience how difficult the ‘limbo’ is. I also know what it’s like to lose every friend you thought you ever had. I’m happy you have the support of your parents. Someone recommended CoSA (Circles of Support and Accountability), and I’d like to second that recommendation. In some parts of Canada, they’re only available when people are transitioning out of custody, but in some places they do work with people through the court process. I wish you the best through what – as you know – will be a very difficult time. I’m not always able to reply quickly, but feel free to message if you want to chat.

I have been though it all. I am in Ontario, and I am currently on probation until later this year.

    Hey there,
My son is in the same position as you.

Try looking into Ontario Works for some money. It’s not much, and certainly not a livable wage, but it’s something. Maybe it can help to pay for expenses and SO therapy.

We found my son a social worker who specializes in sexual offences and it has been helpful.

We’re still waiting for our lawyer to get a bail variance, although it has been almost 5 months now.

We are here for you. Hang in there
