As an MST survivor myself and knowing the process, it has gotten WAY BETTER since when I filed back in 2012. They have trained MST coordinators now to handle these sensitive claims and they are done out of one RO which is San Juan.
There are a lot of requirements for MST claims as well that have to be taken into factor. The veteran has to provide clear markers and has to have the PTSD confirmed/conceded by the C&P examiner. They have to fill out the VA21-0781a as well and provide all supporting evidence. Many veterans are afraid to file or ashamed and they should not be afraid nor ashamed to file b/c if they were assaulted sexually or physically or mentally, they deserve to be rated for there trauma they endured.
God knows what my trauma has done to me not only mentally but physically. I live with so many health issues to this day because of my trauma.
I am a huge advocate for all MST victims and hope each veteran gets their claims adjudicated in a timely fashion.
I have a completed MST claim I filed in 2021 and got service connected in January 2022. I believe it took 121 days. It was one of the hardest times of my life, so I’m glad it was only 121 days.
I think some things that keep an MST claim moving along include:
-Have a current or previous PTSD diagnosis before you submit your claim. If you don’t have one, you can request an evaluation for PTSD from the VA.
-Work with a VA MST coordinator or claims specialist. There aren’t many out there, but I believe every region should have a few on staff. They can help determine what evidence and records will be most helpful in your claim and can provide you with updates as the claim moves along.
-submit a fully developed claim. Having ALL of your records at the time you file will reduce processing time.
Helpful Info-
-Have a friend or some type of support network to help you through the claim. Focus on mindfullness, healthy relaxation, or a hobby to pass the time (I personally used reddit. I use this sub a lot when I have a claim and it helps me pass the time when I get anxious). MST claims are incredibly triggering and emotional. You’ll likely need to fight giving in to feelings of depression and hopelessness.
-Understand the ratings criteria and read the CFRs on how PTSD is granted. I believe they are in the sub wiki and will bring a lot of clarification on how claims are decided.
-Know the VA isn’t out to judge you, think you are lying, or think you don’t deserve it. Put all you judgements aside and see the process for what it is. That way, if you get denied, you can plan for an appeal and keep working for service connection.

What’s sad about this is that all those people with MST PTSD claims are very likely going to get much worse with their mental health waiting those 261 days (I know mine did with an MST claim that’s been open for 600+ days).
I hope everyone with an MST/Combat/Non-Combat PTSD claim goes in and gets a VA therapist **ASAP** so when their claim is either approved or denied after waiting 261 days they have proof to submit for either an increase or supplemental. Even if you feel like “Nah, I don’t need a therapist. I’m good.” go get one anyways to talk to. The VA will pay for it and you can use the therapists chart notes as evidence.
If you can’t find a VA therapist or you have to drive an hour to go see one, go check with your local DAV/VSO to see if they might have a list of therapists in your area that are open to referrals. Call VA Community Care and give them that therapists name to get scheduled for help, it takes a few weeks (sometimes months).
In short; dealing with any kind of PTSD is difficult. The VA can find you local therapists that can get you the mental help you need and they’ll 100% pay for it. You don’t have to fight it alone and you certainly should utilize EVERY opportunity the VA has to get you the help you deserve.

I sifted through many, many [Weekly Claim Status|Timeline Thread|Social Thread](https://old.reddit.com/r/VeteransBenefits/search?q=Weekly+Claim+Status%7CTimeline+Thread%7CSocial+Thread&restrict_sr=on&include_over_18=on) posts. I followed up on those posts that listed MST as their claim. Yes, I stalked user’s histories to see if they ever posted that they got a decision after they posted their incomplete claims in the weekly threads.
2. I looked for r/VeteransBenefits Original Posts in which users declare “My claim has closed” or similar posts. I looked for MST in those posts.
3. I looked for folks who responded to posts asking about MST timelines.
4. I searched the subreddit many different ways in hopes of finding users who declared their complete timelines. It’s very uncommon for MST claimants to post their completed timelines.
5. I found many, many more incomplete MST claims than I could log. Sorry folks!!

My supplemental for MST has been sitting since February. IÔÇÖm hoping for a c&p exam. IÔÇÖve talked with VERA and they just said it takes a long time. Any advice for me?
I donÔÇÖt know how much more waiting i can take. Lost one vehicle to repossession. About to lose my second. A month behind on rent, two months behind on cell service and donÔÇÖt know how i can pay it this time before shut off. Charged off loans and credit cards. I have nothing else of value to sell including family possessions. IÔÇÖm talking to a therapist but itÔÇÖs not helping. I try to put a mask on but i feel like IÔÇÖm breaking.
Mine was just decided, 30% for PTSD with alcohol abuse and 30% for tmj and bruxism. Original file BDD January.
Never reported the assault while in, went to C&P claiming anxiety with diagnosis and seeing a counselor, was diagnosed with PTSD at the exam, downplayed my symptoms because I literally canÔÇÖt help myself apparently- claim deferred in July for a letter requested describing the incident. I had a buddy letter from husband and another from someone I served with at the time. I had clear markers around the time and a STD test around the incident and I broke 8 teeth from grinding them so hard from anxiety.
I thank them for believing me, but definitely think I should have rated at 50. My own fault, I didnÔÇÖt do research before I claimed because I figured they would say I was lying.
IÔÇÖm currently living this hell. Mine has been in higher level review for 60 days and has been in process for well over a year. IÔÇÖm tired, drained, reliving the trauma is unfuckingbearable. The anxiety everyday checking the status multiple times a day is excruciating.
Mine took 89 days in 2017. I was fully prepared for 6+months though.
I’m about to file my first claim which is for MST. I don’t have a nexus letter or current diagnosis of PTSD. But what I do have is a well documented case, witness statements, and proof of dealing with MH issues in the military before I was kicked out. I’m hoping that by filing I can finally get the help I need.

Filed a new claim for PTSD/MST March 16, 2023, status hasn’t changed at all. Spoke to VERA who advised me that the claim hasn’t been touched. Writing this makes me nauseous. I hate talking about it or thinking about it. I’ve been out of the military for over 30 years and just the thought of my many violations makes me sick to my stomach! Wishing everyone dealing with this and healing from this many blessings.
How about a survey of number of additional claims, vs processing times per milestone in the claims process.
That would be not only helpful, but pretty interesting data as well.
Edit: also adding if it’s a claims increase, or initial claim to the data survey would better help the understanding of processing times. Service connection, surely effects processing time.
Thanks for putting this together and sharing! I filed Nov 2022 and got decisions on most in June 2023. PTSD (MST/Combat) deferred. VERA says to expect a long wait re managing my expectations because the PACT Act backlog is huge. I also have 2 supplementals appealing two claims that were SC at 0%, which she says are in auto processing pilot programs.
