Assam State Finance Commission Established
Commission Details
The Government of Assam has established the Seventh Assam State Finance Commission in pursuance of the provisions of Article 243-I and 243-Y of the Constitution of India. The Commission is headed by Lieutenant General Rana Pratap Kalita (Retd) as its Chairman and six other members.
The members of the Commission are:
- The senior most Secretary of Finance Department
- The senior most Secretary of Panchayat and Rural Development Department
- The senior most Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Affairs
- Debeswar Malakar, IAS (Retd.)
- Prof. Mrinal Kanti Dutta, Economist, IIT-G
- The Special Secretary to the Finance Department
Commission’s Responsibilities
The Commission’s primary responsibility is to make recommendations on various matters related to the finances of Panchayats and Municipalities in Assam. These recommendations will be guided by the principles governing the distribution between the State of Assam and the Panchayats and Municipalities of the net proceeds of taxes and duties levied and collected.
Additionally, the Commission will consider the measures needed to improve the financial position of Panchayats and Municipalities, as well as any other matters referred to it by the Governor in the interests of sound financial position of Panchayats and Municipalities.
