Hello everyone,
As the title suggests, I recently relocated to Japan and I am actively searching for finance-related employment opportunities in Tokyo or its neighboring areas. I want to enhance my chances of landing a desirable position. Are there any specific courses or certifications, such as CPA, CA, CMA, that I should consider to strengthen my profile? Additionally, I have already achieved success in clearing CFA Level 2. Moreover, I am also dedicating myself to learning the Japanese language, although reaching the N2 level is expected to take a considerable amount of time.

Engaging with local finance professionals and organizations through industry events, online forums, and social media platforms can help you establish valuable connections. Attend conferences, join relevant finance associations, and actively participate in networking events to expand your circle of contacts. These connections can provide you with insights into job openings, referrals, and mentorship opportunities that may not be advertised elsewhere.
3. Language Proficiency:
While reaching the N2 level in Japanese is undoubtedly time-consuming, the investment in language acquisition is well worth it. A solid understanding of the local language not only facilitates effective communication but also demonstrates your commitment to assimilating into the Japanese business culture. Consider enrolling in language courses, joining language exchange programs, or hiring a language tutor to accelerate your progress. Fluency in Japanese will open doors to better job prospects and increase your interaction opportunities within the finance industry.

* get a S**hikiho** book (Y2,400 on AMZN) and dive in.
* use the http://www.jpx.co.jp site to study background. the **JPX** chairman gives interviews. quote something he recently said. good luck.
When I worked in CitiGroup I noted that all of the expats were from privileged backgrounds. There was a burgeoning number of South Asians in my team at the time and when finally one of the new expat traders starting was an Indian guy they were all whooping and high-fiving each other about this sea-change. I’d spoken to the guy already and he’d been telling me how he went to the University of Hawaii and did some masters at an Ivy League school so I warned them not to be too triumphant.
I was mocked for just being resentful that one of their own had finally made the grade. Well, much to their chagrin, the new guy wanted nothing to do with them being vaguely embarrassed to have them at his desk and when he rang up he’d specifically ask for me being the only non-Indian in the team.
I guess the moral of the story is that entree to any positions that are of quality like an expat role in finance is pretty much locked out to anyone without some sort of old boy connection network. They’re a clique.
Pointers are difficult unless you indicate what career you want to focus on, between a CPA and a CIA you’re looking at different careers. Are you looking at banking, trading, consulting in the big 4, or house position ? They do not need the same profiles, just like back home.
Since you are already in Japan, I would sit down with experienced head hunters and figure out with them what (foreign) companies, jobs and certs you should focus on.
