Centro San Antonio Offers Free Storefronts for Local Small Businesses in Downtown Area

SAN ANTONIO ÔÇô Centro San Antonio, a local nonprofit organization focused on creating a beautiful, welcoming, and safe downtown, has launched a program to assist local small businesses in obtaining their own storefronts free of charge. This initiative aims to fill empty storefronts, attract more people to the downtown area, and encourage further investment.

Applications for this program are now open, providing a unique opportunity for aspiring entrepreneurs.

One successful participant, Mariam Bah, owner of Pure Aloha Bath and Beauty, expressed her excitement about expanding her product offerings due to the additional space provided by the program. “We make everything from facial care products, hair care, lip care, and body care products. And now that I have more space here in my store, IÔÇÖve actually decided to bring in more accessories, clothing, and things like that,” said Bah.

As an alumna of the Holidays on Houston Street pop-up shop, Bah is among the two businesses that transitioned from a temporary pop-up shop to a permanent brick-and-mortar establishment. Reflecting on her experience, Bah emphasized how the pop-up program played a pivotal role in making her dream store a reality.

Bah said, “My experience last November and December doing the Houston Street pop shops was actually amazing because it led to me finally having my own store. I think the program gave me the boost that I needed. You know, it feels like your community is here, saying we need you here. We want what you have. You are a vital part of the community.”

The Holidays on Houston Street pop-up shop offers aspiring retailers a no-cost retail space in the heart of downtown from early November to the end of December. Out of the six businesses that participated last year, two are now establishing their own shops. Trish DeBerry, president and CEO of Centro San Antonio, highlighted the program’s importance for the small business ecosystem downtown, as it generated $50,000 in revenue.

This initiative not only assists small businesses in taking the next step towards growth but also contributes to the revitalization of the downtown area. During a time of escalating excitement associated with downtown development, Centro San Antonio aims to foster a thriving community of entrepreneurs.

“There is new excitement associated with downtown. ItÔÇÖs palpable. You can feel it,” said DeBerry. “We talk about stadiums and that opportunity and what that means to downtown.”

Mariam Bah shared her advice for aspiring entrepreneurs, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and support within the small business community. “ItÔÇÖs crucial to work with other small businesses. We are a community. We have to support each other to succeed,” said Bah.
